Most all of the diving specialties can be learned from a good, experienced mentor if you have decent basic skills and are not too clumsy and are motivated. If someone does not have access to this resource (and has the disposable income), I think it makes perfect sense to take any specialty class that interests a person.
I would draw the line (for mentoring) at doing penetration or cavern or cave diving- those you really do need a class.
