I started a tradition some years ago. Oh holydays like Easter, Christmas, as well as important other holidays like Thanksgiving, I try to get in a couple of hours of reflection, peace, and quiet by getting UW, chatting with whatever marine life wants to visit, and generally enjoying the beauty of nature.

This morning I was lucky enough to get in a nice dive off the beach in Deerfield Beach (FL). After two months of winds and seas, with only an occaisional break timed to conflict with work, the conditions were very nice this morning. Blue water was close in to shore, altho there is still a lot of sediment from the erosion over the last weeks. The result was 50' of viz, but pretty water. But I snuck in 95 minutes, and had a very enjoyable dive. Water temps are gradually inching up (76-77 degree) and I ditched the hood so I could hear the seasounds.

The patch reef has lots of sand surrounding it, and there are new areas exposed from the shifting currents and winds. The inside reef is well worth exploring since the weather has exposed some new terrain. Some shells have been uncovered. There was also a tremendous amount of juveniles hiding in the new holes. I spotted a bunch of juvie drums, all fingernail size (my nails, not nails created by the Boca Spa and Nail Salon). Other sights:

A baby playing I Am Curious Trigger
Mr Jack, cruising of course
Octo holes, but no visible octos
A lunch sized flounder who will see another day due to my reflective nature
More neat stuff

So the gear is washed and drying, and I'm off to clean the pool filters before enjoying a nice kosher ham. The edge has been smoothed - I guess I can go to work tomorrow and pretend not to notice the stuff that makes us all crazy.

Happy Easter

Nice... I thought it would be a great day to dive. This morning was indeed georgous out. Glad you had a good dive.
Happy Easter

I got in four today ... got to the beach around 8:30 this morning. Met some friends from a local dive shop and hooked up with them while waiting for my scheduled buddies to show (they were coming at 10). Got done with that dive just about the time my friends arrived. Nice bunch ... 10 divers in all. Several had driven fairly long distances (from Oregon and B.C.) to be there.

We did three more dives, exploring a couple of old boats, the "appliance field" (found three octos in various stoves and dishwashers), some tire reefs, and the other things folks have put down there for fish habitat. Saw my first flabellina fusca of the season ... a tiny nudibranch that typically starts showing up right about when the eel grass starts to grow. Watched a moon snail making it's little sand-castle egg casing. Saw an octopus on eggs underneath one of the boats. Watched a kelp greenling court a potential mate ... hope he gets lucky. Ah me ... spring is in the air ... and the water.

Basically, I spent Easter at my "church" ... being thankful for this window to the wonders of nature. And it was as gorgeous above as below. Sunny day, mid 70's, no wind.

Awesome day ... left the beach around 5:30, tired, happy, and slightly sunburned ... :D

Didn't know they had such a thing! How do they do that?

Sounds like a great dive and a great tradition. I was just thinking what a great idea that would be, but then I realized I'd be cutting a hole in the ice for pretty much every holiday. Might get away with Memorial Day and July 4.... I need to head south

Happy Easter indeed!

I admit, sometimes the pragmatics do interfere with the holiday tradition. It could take some time to do this, but you'll learn to associate chainsaws & woolies with the winter holidays.
