Stopped by OOS today - glad I did, good to talk with someone in person and get a feel for the physical footprint of the gear. Also good to get some ballpark estimates on total cost based on different cameras in different housings as well as detailed list of the various parts and accessories I would need with each one.

You're pretty spot on with my needs at the moment (local and macro focused) and good to talk to someone who dives the same conditions locally.

I've got some homework to do.

My 2 cents

there are a lot of good choices. Canon, Nikon and Sony all make great cameras and sharp glass. The Olympus TG series is also well liked for macro. One thing to consider as you “grow” is that underwater housings are designed for specific camera models and the housing can cost as much as the camera. Plus, for interchangeable lens cameras, you need a different, dedicated port for each lens. Most shooters get one port for a macro lens and a rectilinear and a dome port for a wide angle lens. With all of this gear, costs add up.

In your situation I would look for a good used system and realize that you are likely to change it up as you get a better feel for what you want to shoot.
