Creating more Government? Maybe.
 He said maybe.

I just finished reading Dragon Sea Amazon.com: Dragon Sea: A True Tale of Treasure, Archeology, and… and there is a science vs profit theme to it that I don't get it.

The academic world seems to get all bent out of shape when people salvage wrecks for money but it isn't feasible for them to study all of them anyway.

On the other hand I don't see why anyone wants to take a pry bar and a chisel 175 feet under the water to take a corroded port hole off either, but I sure as hell don't want the federal trying to regulate anything any more than it already does.

So I say take your prybar and hammer and hit that cold dirty Atlantic off of NJ. Me, I'm gonna go look at the pretty fish and the prettier topless Senoritas this weekend and somehow force a smile.:depressed:

Ha. I have never understood the fascination with UW wrecks aside from the marine life they attract. Divers incur a lot of cost and risk to view what they can otherwise see mothballed by the hundreds afloat in most harbors. To each their own I guess. I like reefs, ledges, etc.

Personally, I think the ecosystem protections this could bring are long past due. We've raped and pillaged the oceans for far too long. It's time we give at least some areas a chance to breathe and recover so they will enhance unprotected areas nearby.

Yes, I'm one of those namby pamby academics... but one who spends a lot more time underwater than I do in a classroom... and over my SIX decades underwater I've seen a lot of damage done (and a few potential success stories as well).

Oh, and one of my research papers was on a short list of 10 recommended to NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco on this topic.

Yet another socialist power grab by a Democratic administration gone wild.
How's that change workin' for you?

I could care less whether somebody raids a wreck (assuming it's not considered an underwater grave for downed servicemen or the like). I do favor protecting coral reefs. I think most people on the forum would share these views (particularly on protecting coral reefs).

The problem I'm having with that executive order is that it's big on lofty P.C. B.S. talk, and short on actual nitty-gritty specifics about how regulations will impact us. Reads more like a mission statement, in other words. I'm something of a cynic so my resentment builds just hearing that sort of thing. I want to know exactly how it'll impact us.

Jim gave one example; do we have others?

I imagine with the BP oil spill it was only a matter of time till something like this came out.

Richard.

I'd have to agree on this... it is like a mission statement and we need to see more detail to understand how it might be implemented.

This was in the works LONG before the BP spill, although the timing may make it look otherwise.
