Welcome to the board. You have a lot of questions. I agree with the rental idea. It will give you a chance to experience different set ups. Just don't be against backplate with wing... Give them a try also. Here are some links I hope will help you along. If you have already been to these, then I'm sorry for taking up posting room...If you plan on coming to Florida, think about coming to West Palm Beach area for diving. There is some great diving from Jupiter to Miami and everything in between.

MoonWrasse:
Buy a safety sausage, whistle or better Dive Alert type device, small light you can clip to your BCD. You may want to add a dive computer (you don't need to get a Suunto D9), dive knife.
BCD, SPG/reg I'd continue to rent until you figure out what kind of diving you want to do.

Oh, and having your own wetsuit is comfortable.

Safety Sausage?!...well, if you hadn't followed that up with "whistle" I would still be scrathching my head. Thanks for the scoop on the small essentials that I hadn't thought of (well, I did think of the knife). I was scoping the knives when I first went to the Dive Shop to sign up to get certified. I appreciate the info!
