Just take your old horsecollar and flip it upside down and then stick your cambands through the neck opening, voila, instant mini wing complete with CO2 inflation. That is what we did before we were so fortunate as to live in the age of enlightenment and the invention of the wing and backplate. N

...Dive right also has a narrow travel wing for a few bucks less than Oxycheq but I don't
know about the lack of a center panel. It would seem to me that even though there is a center strap in the middle holding the two sides together, it looks as though that could put a lot of stress on just one small point of contact in the center of an area that want's to go up, i.e. the inflation tube. It just looks somewhat flimsy by design, maybe I'm wrong?...

My wife and I have had the DiveRite Travel wing for a while, and I've had a DiveRite Voyager wing a little longer. Nothing flimsy about the center using webbing instead of fabric. DiveRite claims the webbing is stronger than the fabric, plus it give you lots of options as far as running cam straps through the wing if you're not using a STA. Donut, inner bladder zips out, plenty compact for us, very pleased with DiveRite quality and customer service. If you're not rough on gear you don't need the indestructible super fabric covering and can just go for the regular ballistic nylon shell for the wing. The DiveRite Travel wing only has one set of grommets for vertical spacing

Love my diverite hunterpac great for travelling and 30lb lift

I am rough on gear and can attest to the sturdiness of the Dive Rite Voyger

My wife has a frog bladder, it's 6 years old, gets dived weekly has about 500 dives on it. only now is the outer starting to wear, especially impressive given our local conditions of very high heat and high UV index.

Why do you need a new wing?

I got a used Mach V without an inflator for a song. Pairs like a glove with old number 10. And if you are designing a new plate, please consider a set of 11" holes for those of us who are getting all crazy about tiny twinsets...

I know that your Freedom Plate had to be modified when the ever so popular Mach V's came out. I'm guessing that the intent of this thread is that you are just checking to see that it doesn't happen again. I don't see anything out there. How do you improve a Mach V?

Please consider accommodating tiny independent doubles with your latest plate. 20's, 30's, stuff like that. They speak to minimalism, trim, and safety. Two primaries, two secondaries, one SPG on the wing's tank, no SPG on the other. Done and done.

I'm seriously working on this backpacking dive...

Improve the Mach V, hmmmm. I would like to see a bladder-less travel wing like my Oxy 18 but closer to 22 pounds of lift for a little extra versatility. No bladder would reduce the ruggedness but with heavy fabric it could still be stout and also lighter and easier to roll up. As to the standard aluminum or steel tech plates, get out of the box, the VDH Universal plate is much more amenable to single tank travel diving that full size tech plates.

I was slow to switch to the VDH Universal plate because I do dive single hose and I had good luck with my Oxy Travel plate. I had it all set up and dialed in and it worked fine with either single or double hose regs, scooter or not and I was happy with it. So I bought the VDH Plate and did not even use it for a year or close. Then when I did, I did not like it. In Coz I saw my buddies using it and decided to give it another try. This time it clicked and with some tweaking of my set up I soon decided it was the best plate I had ever used. You know, I realize there is controversy over tank position but single tanks rig tech plates usually have the upper camband barely on the shoulder of the tank unless the tank is set very high, with the VDH plate you can put the tank high or low and anywhere in between. The bent tech plate was designed for double tanks, the Vee bend is not needed for a single tank and is detrimental to a stable rig. In a doubles configuration the tech plate puts the tanks in an ideal position very close to the back but for a single it places the tank on top of the channel too far from the divers back and it looks unstable and it dives unstable. The doubles tech plate for single tank diving is just tech-ie bleed over into sport diving.

...//... I'm not interested in wide wings since this will be used with a very slim new plate I made and I'm into long and narrow wings for maximum streamlining. ...//...
I understand your desire for streamlining, but I just can't get past wanting the best of both worlds. The fit and feel of a Freedom Plate against your back and the benefits of a tiny twinset. Two oversize holes in the plate to accommodate the wingnuts and two straps in the back rail to grab on to...

With doubles, the center channel of a regular plate nestles down in the V of the tanks, so the tanks themselves are only separated from you by the thickness of the plate itself plus the thickness of the wing. IOW, it doesn't seem to me that there would be any advantage to using a Freedom plate with doubles.

Get a DSS Kydex BP and your doubles will be about as close to your body as you could ever hope for. The Kydex is only 1/8" thick. And the Kydex BP is less than 1 pound negative (and very light, out of the water). All in all, it seems like a better solution for a lot of scenarios of diving doubles.
