I just "inherited" a g12. It has a flip out screen. I bought a cannon underwater housing. so (as everybody knows) the only viewfinder is too small for anything. how do you do underwater photos with this small view finder? or do I just have to get use to it. sorry but I am just a neophyte on this issue.

Why do I get the feeling you haven't flipped the LCD so it is facing outward in the housing? If that's not the problem, find the button that turns on the display.

(Reading the manual will take you a long way with this camera)

With my G7 (the baby brother of the G12), I used the LCD only. The viewfinder is as you say small, but the viewfinder on a compact camera doesnt look through the lens, so its also inaccurate..
On my DSLR I do use the viewfinder rather than the LCD though.

The suggestion of reading the G12 manual is a very good one as the camera pack a lot of punch for a compact system and can give you loads of joy if you learn to master it :)
