My husband and I are newly certified and are heading to cozumel in ten days for four days of diving. We are staying at the Allegro resort. Does anyone have any news on the dive shop there at the resort. I heard we could shore dive for free (we will be renting or using tanks and weights). Any information helpful.

On-site is Dive Palancar. Well-suited to the new diver--tightly scheduled & regimented, safety-consciousness, serves many inexperienced divers, nice boats & rental gear, and very convenient to both the resort & the reefs.

Yes, free shore diving if it's included in your package, but not a whole lot to see out front of the resort. Be sure to keep an eye on the current so that you don't exit at the Iberostar.

Do have fun.

Went there in January with a friend doing her first ocean dives, and really liked them. Told DM "Ishmel" it was her first time after certification, and he held her hand through both dives! (It took both of us to take care of her at first. :big grin:) He was on standby the next morning, so she hired him for one on one care. I thought this was a good idea for a new diver, especially with the depths and currents we were doing; y'all might consider hiring your own DM, since you are both new. He was on that afternoon, but had a light load, so he still watched her closely. We also tipped well.

They do two tanks on one trip in the morning, take you back for the free lunch, then do two more that afternoon. Losts of diving, but they take such good care of you, loading your gear, tanks, etc, changing your tanks for you, and all - very tip oriented, and worthy! Four a day may or may not be good for you, though? Don't take chances! Their big boats are quite nice and roomy, although hard to steer. Don't let it run you over when they pick you up; just be ready to push back a bit. They're so close to the good sites that the ten minute warning is done FIVE MINUTES BEFORE LEAVING THE DOCK.

Be sure to close your mouth when you shower, brush your teeth with the bottled water brought to your room, and - this is serious - :sunny: take your own light bulbs. They use very dim ones, leaving the rooms too dark. Oh yeah, take a couple of extension cords with multi outlets.

The place is quite nice, albeit a little plastic, and the food is good & plentiful. There's nothing else around you there, so I'd go to Dive, Dive, Dive. :slick:

When you get back, talk to your LDS about Advanced & Nitrox training. Even more fun!

You are going to be spoiled for life by the diving in Cozumel. You are going to love it! Forget all your worries about being a newbie.Just relax and enjoy some of the best diving in the area!

Make sure if you are staying at Allegro to request a room AWAY from the water treatment plant because it smells like sewage in that part of the Allegro complex. The part that smells is the north corner closest to the check-in lobby, or the immediate area to your right after you walk through the lobby/check-in desk. Request a room close to the beach or on the south side of the complex, the south side being on your left after you walk through the lobby.

We stayed on the north side of the complex about halfway to the pool and it was fine. But people who stayed on the north side of the complex closest to the main check-in desk complained of the smell.

I liked this resort and would stay there again in a heartbeat. Great diving, decent to good food, lush landscaping, two big pools, very nice beach and view. This place is better than the Occidental Grand.

Just got back from there yesterday and stayed there July 21st through the 25th.
