Hello tikyo - welcome to SB! I am a newly certified diver and I have two daughters who are interested in learning to dive as well. I took the PADI Discover Scuba class first and then the OW class. My daughters (ages 10 & 13) did a Discover Scuba class this summer and loved it. The 13 year old would like to work on getting her Junior certification next summer. I would like for the 10 year old to get more comfortable before we proceed. IMO - the cost is the limiting factor, especially where children are concerned. This is an expensive hobby/sport.
SB is a great place to be because you can learn from divers from all around the world. You can also pickup used equipment here on SB. Do your research and then post what you are looking for. I researched here on SB before I invested. I made purchases both from local dive shops (LDS) and from online dive shops. Happy diving!
