Ok, I'll go ahead and post. I'm a newbie to the site. I've been wanting to get certified for about 15 years - I'm now 34 - but have just never gotten around to it. So, right now I reading up, learning everything I can and trying to loose some weight and get in better shape. Hopefully sometime next Spring I'll be in the shape I would like to be in and can take the classes.

I'm 37 and just became certified this year. I had planned on it for, well, the past 20 years, but always let something get in my way. Finally a friend signed my wife and I up, so the excuses had to stop. The water work is actually an excellent way to lose weight. Just make sure you get cleared by your doctor prior to starting and jump in! I can't believe the enjoyment that I missed over the years.

Shape? We're supposed to be in shape for this sport? Well,l NetDoc did say that round is a shape.

Howdy Tex!

And welcome to SB - the biggest, the best, the fastest growing, and :D the friendliest!

Yeah, it'll help. I'm not in top condition, but I do have to carry all my own gear and tanks onto some boats, I have to haul myself and all my gear outa' the water on a bucking ladder at times, and - I have to be in reasonable shape for the diving itself. But you might talk wiht your Local Dive Shop, as they can look you over and give you a better idea.

Completing your Profile and seperately - keeping your Dive Info up to date helps in future diving discussions. You might want to go aehad and select 0-15 dives, so we'll all know to give you answers appropriate for a newbie. You can use the Quick Links menu above for this. PM me if I can help you learn your way around.

Hey Flyyakker, Welcome to the board Neighbor. Congratulations on taking the decision to make our great sport a part of your life. Getting in shape is definitely a great idea before you take your Open Water course in the Spring.

Please let us know how you progress and PM any of us if you want help.

Don't forget to keep a eye on the Texas Swamp Divers forum for some local content and to meet other SB local memebers.

cheers,
Maria

Welcome to ScubaBoard! :happywave

Why wait? Diving is a great way to get in shape and you don't have to be in great shape to start out.

Check out our New 2 Scuba forum for more info on getting started.

Dive safe!

Christian

P.S. Due to the high volume of new posts in the Introductions and Greets forum, it's not always possible to keep up with all the new posts here. So, please help me out and send me a PM if you post anything you want me to read or repsond to in this forum.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not just putting it off to loose weight, but I'm not really looking forward to doing my ow dives in the cold. I'm going to Mexico at the end of Oct. but I just can't get the class time in before then and it's not something I feel I should rush. So, I'll take the classes next spring when it starts to warm up.

Hello Flyyakker, and welcome to Scubaboard! Just got around to being certified myself at 36. Did my first dive 15 years ago but procrastinated long enough! Wish you luck in meeting your goals so you can enjoy diving as much as we do around here.
