Are there any NC dives that could be doable for a newbie, maybe with a DM? NC is the best diving within driving distance but I don't think I'm really ready for it.

There are some quarries. The inshore wrecks ought to be doable for you. There are also some shore dives. You may consider taking an AOW, Wreck, or Deep course from one of the Dive Operators so you can do the offshore stuff.

Both the Indra off of Morehead City and the Liberty Ship (Alexander Ramsey) off of Wilmington are regarded as beginner level dives. Don't expect much hand-holding from a DM here though. They really don't do much of that. An experienced buddy would be good to have if it's your first wreck dive around here.

Also, a good place to get plugged in with NC diving is http://www.ncdivers.com . It's a great group of folks who love diving, and newcomers are always welcome. :)

Welcome to the board.
NC is not my favorite place for a newbie but there are some dives that are acceptable. Your best bet is to come join us on the NC board, do some diving with us in the quarries to get your skills up some. Then I would bet you can find one of us to join you off shore for some easy dives. Come to think of it, a newbie dive might be a good thing to do again. Come to the NC board, the link is in my signature.
