Diver dies in incident on Coast » The Gisborne Herald | Gisborne's latest News, Sport, Family Notices, Photos and Events
POLICE are investigating an apparent drowning of a diver at Whareponga Beach, 10 kilometres south of Ruatoria, on Saturday.

The body of a 41-year-old man was found on the beach on Saturday afternoon.

“The body has been sent for a post- mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death,” a Ruatoria police spokesman said this morning.

“The death is not treated as suspicious.”

Police have described it as a tragic accident.

“The victim, a Ruatoria resident, was at the beach diving for seafood when the incident occurred,” the spokesman said.

The St John Ambulance, the local fire brigade and police responded.

“Attempts were made to resuscitate the man but he could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the beach.”

The death has been referred to the coroner.
