Hi everyone! I am a camp director and am looking into starting a scuba program at my camp. I have never been diving before but, growing up I did a bit of snorkeling with my dad. I would love to get started with my own experience but I think it would be incredible for some of the kids I work with. The camp is located just outside of Killeen, Tx and I was hoping someone could give me a name or some info on getting started in the area.

Hey there, and welcome to scubaboard! :)

I can't help with your specific questions, but there's an active Texas diving community on this board. Be sure to check out the Texas forum and post your questions there.

Probably one of them will see you here, though. They're a friendly bunch

Again, welcome to the board!

Scuba Plus isn't around any longer I don't believe.
The only other shop around Killeen (that I know of) is Scuba Diver's Paradise on Stillhouse Hollow Lake in Belton, 254-933-8355. http://www.scubadiversparadise.net/
I've dealt with them and C&J several times, they're both pretty friendly and helpful. Good luck. I don't envy your pocketbook after you put together enough diving equipment for a camp full of kids...

WELCOME to ScubaBoard!!!
Now that you've got some leads, how about saying Hello in the "Introductions and Greetings" forum and get a proper ScuabBoard WELCOME!!!

Now for my stock message, which is still under construction: I really do have to work on modifying this note!!!
This is a great place to meet people, talk about diving, and get information on just about any aspect of diving -or other subjects sometimes- that you can think of. Roaming through the forums is great help for me.
Now get wet with us and dive into the forums to ask questions, answer those that you can and even chat with folks about diving dreams and nightmares. ScubaBoard is a great place to spend your required Surface Intervals.
When you post a question, be as sure as you can that it's in the right forum or you'll probably find it moved.
The folks here are passionate about their diving, some about their specialty, so the reading can get very interesting, sometimes very hot.
Don't forget, if you haven't already done it, to fill out you profile as completely as reasonable, it'll save you being asked and having to repeat the information often.
Enjoy!

Tom

Welcome to the board.

Best wishes on your endeavor. Invariably, you will need a several instructors who enjoy dealing with children, a ready source for rental gear including tanks and air, and a few dive masters wouldn't hurt.

I am assuming you have a swimming pool on site. Hopefully it has a deep end of at least 8 feet.

If you have any more questions feel free to post them.

Good luck,

TwoBit

You may be able to work an arrangement with a reputable local dive shop whereby they provide instructors in some sort of percentage deal. They might also be willing to provide gear for a greater percentage. You might want to try this type of arrangement first, so that you don't have to make a huge investment in order to try it out.

If it flies, then you could put more of your own money into it. If it doesn't, you probably didn't lose any $ on the deal anyway. You also might have a great time with the kids.

But, I would also think that you need to decide if this is some sort of resort course type of diving, or if it will be certified training. It will be important to stress the difference to the campers. If they get to play around a bit, and then think that it's okay to go out and dive without certification, they might get injured. They need to understand the difference. And, of course, there are age limits at which a child may be certified by the various agencies- I think PADI's is 10 for a Jr. Cert.

Good luck and let us know what happens, and what you decide. Hope it works out, wish I could have gone to SCUBA camp.
