Hey all! I'm a 21 and have only been diving for a short time. I was certified in a semester long course in college. I received my YMCA advanced certification. I now have 20 dives logged. My father was also recently certified with a basic open water certification from PADI. I am very interested in fathering my scuba education. I would like to have the training and experience to be able to be hired as a dive master at a shop, resort, charter. I would like to get started in the right direction, but I have no idea what that is. Also I would like to purchase my own gear this summer. I would most likely be looking to spend a max of about 1k. Any suggestions or help on either of these topics would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the board eurospeed951, I am not familiar with YMCA Scuba, but with PADI you need the following to become a divemaster candidate:

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or qualifying certification from another training organization
PADI Rescue Diver certification or qualifying certification from another training organization.
Medical clearance signed by a physician
20 logged dives
18 years old

Your decision to purchase your own gear is a great decision because that would give the freedom to dive more and gain more experience.
Many members of the board are more experienced than I and I am sure that they would give valuable suggestions.

Welcome to the board. You'll find a lot of helpful and useful advice on buying your own gear in the Scuba Equipment section.

Good luck!
