The number of sessions has little meaning. Asession can be 20min. or 4 hrs. The courses that require more of your time YMCA, NAUI will probably teach you more simply by virture of time spent in class and in water. Some agencies, PADI, SSI don't take as much of your time before your c card is issued. Learning from NAUI or YMCA gives you a lot better opportunity to earn the card you will be issued.

How long does it take most people to feel completely comfortable with the whole diving thing? Will it ever feel like second nature to me?

Everyone is different. For example, some people are terrified when they first take up diving, while others are like fish in the ocean. Some learn quickly, and others need a little or a lot more time. The important thing is not to get discouraged and therefore give updiving. Take as long as you need to overcome fears and to learn what's needed. Don't ever let anyone rush you. You have the rest of your life(if your health allows it) to learn and do it all.

It may be enough to get started, but let me assure you, the learning curve never ends. Oh, and BTW, welcome!

also somewhat new. my first couple of dives were great. looking back on it - i think it was because i had great faith in my dive instructor. on dives after the initial cert i didn't feel as comfortable. had a scare where i rented equip for an open water dive in the caribbean and the equip failed ~~ the local dive boat indicated it wasn't there equip and was my inexperience.

would like to pursue the sport, but am considering that i need to get my own equip - esp important while i'm still in training wheels :} to move on further.

anyway - what's everyone take on getting their own equip vs. renting?

i quess that's my question - when do you invest the big bucks vs. is this hobby?

ops, thinking outloud.

look forward to others experiences.

Trouble with rented equip is you need to get used to different gear every time. Most is well maintained, but sometimes... Anyway, buying gear is cheaper than renting after only a few weekend.

Most of us buy gear, get used to it, then buy all new gear. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's how it tends to work out.
