I did all my checkout dives in the warm Caribbean and want to dive cold water in Monterey. Spoke with some folks at my LDS who want me to get a dive master or instructor to show me the ropes in Monterey before more advanced diving. So if I don't have dive master buddies, how do I get this type of orientation? How different is it diving in Monterey than in the Caribbean?

Very different.

You can and SHOULD hire a DM guide. Just call any of the LDSs in Monterey.

There's a very helpful webpage for tropical divers coming to Monterey. I'll try to find it and post the URL.

Found it. http://www.garlic.com/~triblet/ba_diving/newmontereydiver.html

@fisheater, thanks for the link. I will ping some local dive masters and also in Monterey to get some orientation to diving cold in Monterey. One LDS has a fun dive coming up and I can meet new divers and get acquainted before deep dives or advanced diving. I have a new semi dry 8mm suit with thermals so it should keep me warm for at least the first couple dives. If I end up diving a lot here then a dry suit is the way to go from what I've read.
