As a relatively new diver (got certified ten years ago and only getting back into it) I would rate my enjoyment/usefulness of the gear I ended up buying as follows:

Mask > Computer > Fins > Reg > BCD

Things that are on my list for the future are wetsuit, dive light, DIN to yoke converter, and gas analyzer. Having just travelled with a BCD for the first time, it was absolutely amazing to dive with, but a bit of a pain in the butt to figure out how to clean it and dry it in time for my flight (dove Saturday afternoon, flew Sunday evening in FL). So that's one factor to consider.

I actually recently bought some trim weight pockets that quick attach to the tank strap so that I can fly with those on trips where scuba isn't the main focus and not be negatively impacted by the rental BCD selection.
