There is always a solution my friend! Through the good graces of another Scubaboard member I now have a 5" LCD just begging for a housing. Including the screen and the battery system that I'm building, my total cost will be about $120. Compare that to the $250 Equinox charges for the 2.5" screen.

Well I'm not sure how you would be able to turn it off because the LCD module is an independent system from the camera. I'm sure there is a way though. I'm actually going to buy my battery today for a whole $15 and it's rechargeable. In theory I should be able to get 4 hours of life off of one charge with this system. I'll probably buy 2 just in case. I could also buy a bigger battery for a longer life but that adds weight and bulk.

It can be done, mine is now set up that way. Just requires a relay and a bit of time. I used the same set up as one of the housing companies, can't remember which one. I did change the relay that they suggested with a electronic relay. Cost me $65 instead of $10 but it is worth knowing that I'm not taking the chance of frying my camera.

Oh that's awesome! So I'm guessing that your LCD mosule has it's own dedicated power supply?

It does have its own power source but it can be done using the camera battery. Not totally sure how it is done with the camera battery but it shouldn't be that difficult. Just a matter of splicing in to the supply someplace along the line.

So that sounds like you would have to dig into the camera body to be able to gain access to power wires right?

Actually I think you could use the power from the LANC port or the mic port but it would depend upon the voltage needed for the LCD.

The one that I'm using requires 12v and pulls about 550mHa an hour. With the smaller battery I got, the LCD should last about 2.5 hours on a single charge. The bigger battery, which is a lot bulkier and weighs more, will last about 8 hours on a single charge. I just put the battery in a plastic case and mounted a fuse and power jack which allows me to plug it to the LCD and a charger. The fuse can be replaced externally to which is kind of nice. I designed it so everything uses the same type of adapter. Everything except the LCD module was bought at my least favorite store in the entire world, Fry's.

I'll put up pics of the battery system once everything is finished. It's all pretty simple.
