well... ya, this one is kinda tacky too.... it looks like they just put their tank sticker on this thing.... oh well. I have never seen anybody ever use OMS regulators or OMS fins... I guess some products are just never meant to be...

Do you really think so? If so, check out the front of their new reg.

So, is this finally a DIR compliant rig or there is still some OMS vs Halcyon rivalry that would create points to make it non DIR?
Take the D-ring off of the right hip and it's fine. It's going to get in the way of your canister anyways.

For that matter, why buy a harness at all? It only takes 5 minutes to rig the plate, and you are going to have to fit and adjust it whether you buy it or web it yourself.

For the crotch strap, I buy the Trident weight belt... $8 gets me a stainless buckle and over 4 feet of webbing that is a LITTLE softer than the heavy stuff on the harness.

well... I finally got it, and I must say OMS is far from DIR, unfortunately, since that's' the company I have always been supporting...

anyway, the main problem, although might seem a minor one, is that the crotch strap's loop is too small; i.e. it's just big enough to push the 2" webbing through, and not the buckle, which is way too big for it to go through. What this means is that I have to secure the buckle on the "wrong" side, which will make my canister light not ditchable. I am not sure yet how important this is (still haven't taken the DIR-F class yet), but it would seem logical that when one dives doubles, and has no detachable weight, then your stage bottle and your light becomes your detachable weight. Of course one may always argue that an $800 light will be "hard" to ditch, but when it comes to the light or your life, I think this argument is mute.

I believe any bend greater than 90 degrees and you lose strength in the webbing. A thicker plate with smooth radi will always be better, but with the angles of the straps when worn by the diver, were going to lose some strength no matter what.

Who's hanging by their webbing??? 2000lbs strength?? C'mon folks, we're diving here. Weightless.

Let's not get crazy with sewn vs not. A whole piece of webbing costs all of $10.00 or so. If it get frayed enough to get you nervous, it's a 5 minute/$10.00 job to change out the webbing.

The crotch strap seems to never wear, at least on the really soft one that I use from Halcyon. I think anything stiffer could get annoying, possibly irritating.

That's not a deal breaker... just remove the stitching and make the loop as big as you'd like, securing it with a non-serrated tri-glide, same as you would do on a DIY harness (or re-sew it... Tandy Leather has the tool needed).
If the webbing isn't long enough, then buy a Trident weight belt... you'll get an extra buckle to secure your canister and more than enough webbing for a proper crotch strap.

As far as ditching the light, that is a last-resort (as is ditching weight in the first place). The ligher weight of the NiHM canisters has pretty much eliminated the idea of it being ditchable weight. If ditching 2 pounds will save you, then you are overweighted.

I know... but that's not the point. We are talking about out of the box product here. of course theer is always a DIY method, but when you actually pay of an brand name peice of gear ...even when it's as simple as a harness webbing... you see what I'm saying?

I understand completely, but you may want to rethink that if you ever intend to scooter. With the buckle on the left, if the scooter tow cord finds its way to the flap of the buckle, it could open it.

Not scootering, with the crotch strap tight enough to not slip over the buckle, the only issue is that the buckle is where your knife should be. Move the knife 3" to the left to clear the buckle and you'll end up surfacing with a black and blue (and very sore) thigh.
Move the knife to the right of the crotch strap and you risk dropping it when you open the harness.

The OMS setup looks pretty good. I would take the D-Ring off the right hip though since you don't need it. I'd get rid of that OMS sticker too. :D

lol... I like their logo though. but since they put their logo on every little thing, I am beginning to resent being a poster boy for OMS. Like all good things, everything should be used in moderation. Oh well, at least they didn't get a brilliant idea to tile it on the harness webbing itself like Halcyon does. Have you seem those blue H's all along the new halcyon harnesses. this is ugly like hell.

My second question, where do you guy get your own DIY harness for 8 bucks that I hear about. I have an old plate and would like to weave it for my Caribbean use.

Thanks,
VT
