new member, going to puerta vallarta and hoping for some information on dive spots and ops

Hello from a fellow Californian! Don't you sometimes feel like you need a tank and regulator when you dive into that LA smog? :-)

Did you get to Puerto Vallarta? How was it?

I noticed you didn't get many replies, but I think there's another section on the different diving areas, it looks very interesting.

I hope you keep posting. This is a cool place!

welcome aboard

Hi there and welcome. I'm fairly new myself. I hope you get the info you seek for Puerto Vallarta. I have not been there, but I have dove throughout Cabo, Cozumel, and Cayman. Of those three, Cabo is my favorite!!!

Where in So Cal do you dive??? Are you a member of any local clubs? Hmmmm....wonder if we have crossed paths.

Take care,

I did 4 dives in Puerto Vallarta in October 2002, just before the hurricane. Here's what I remember:

LOS ARCOS
Waste of time. 3-4 boats dumped 150-200 snorkelers and divers in the same spot. Some fish 1-2 morays, very few corals, mostly just rock. I would not recommend it.

EL MORRO
These are some pinnacles rising from the seabed, covered with purple, yellow and orange gorgonians. Lots of sealife; dolphins and manta from the boat. Great dive and supposedly the best in PV. However, it is definitely an advanced dive and there are 2 things to be aware of:
- the location is 26 miles offshore and the boat is a 16 ft. sloop; for about 1.5 hours (each way!) you are bouncing off 4-6 foot waves. Not a trip to take if you are prone to seasickness and make sure you have a safety sausage.
- the thermoclines are extreme. One moment you are at 82F water from the bay and 10' deeper it may be 65F from the ocean. Descend deeper and it may turn warm again. Very strange and at times uncomfortable.

There is a group of islands in the Bay of Banderas that may be a good compromise. I went with Chico's Dive shop on the Malecon. Other than the tiny boat to El Morro (which is probably typical for that area) I have no complaints.
