Hi - up to dive 20 here in Corsica and I just got my first pair of fins (the black and white Mares skeleton ones) and a new mask - the Mares Lirico.

I chose the mask after trying 20+ in the store and that was the one that fitted best.

I just dived with it this afternoon and despite spitting in it twice before going down, it still fogged. Do you need to put any anti-fog stuff on a new mask? Will this go away as it wears in?

Any suggestions muchly appreciated...

Thanks

Tom

When they manufacture a new mask, they put some silicone on the lense, to keep it from getting scratched while in the factory. You can't see the silicone on the inside of the mask, but trust me, it is there. It is this silicone that causes the mask to fog. There are literally dozens of threads on SB about this phenomenon.

My suggestion: clean the inside VERY WELL before using it. Some use normal hand soap, I like using toothpaste (seems to work better for me). Scrub and scrub until you think you've got it, then scub again. Then again.

yup- defintely clean with toothpaste- some times takes a couple of tries. Don;t use the stuff for extra whitening as this is too abrasive- just regular paste which is mildly abrasive. My hubbies latest mask took three cleans, now it stays fog free like a charm.

I find that Bon Ami works the best. Only cost .79 at the grocery store.

All - especially Mike - many thanks for the assistance. I'll give it a go with the toothpaste and the hand soap.

Also, will search more than 'cursory glance' before posting next time.
