I have excellent news, we have a new staff member on the Kelp Project!! Stacie Fejtek is our new marine ecologist!
Her first day was Tuesday, and we took her to Long Point to dive our site. She loved it, was impressed by all the hard work that has gone into it, and what it has the potential to become. Tom and I are pumped to have Stacie on board with us, as she has a large amount of marine field experience to draw upon. We will need her expertise as we look to develop the kelp project and to possibly include new kelp restoration research needed to move the field forward. We are moving into very exciting times!
Heres a little bit about her:
She is just finishing her Masters as San Diego State University. Her thesis work focused on a deep water species of kelp, Elk Kelp (Pelagophycus porra), and the factors that limited it from establishing within the dominant Giant Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) beds. Stacie is also dedicated to working with outreach programs that heighten awareness of our fragile marine ecosystems. Working with PISCES (Partnership Involving the Sciences at Elementary Schools) in San Diego, Stacie was able to empower non-science oriented elementary school teachers with the ability to teach science through co-teaching using hands-on methods. Stacie hopes to continue reaching out to the community in order to ensure that there is a healthy kelp forest for future generations to come.
Stacie will be diving with us out there and she is excited to meet everybody. So come out, restore our degraded reefs, and learn some kelp ecology! We still have spots available for the boat this Saturday and Sunday. Lets have some fun!
