I have a Sony WA lens that fits inside the housing onto the front of my camcorder. I like it alot and use it most of the time. It was less than $40. The only time I wished I didn't have it on the camcorder was when dolphins came swimming by us 30-40' away (Kona in 2006) and when we found the school of baby sharks in Bahamas this past April. Both situations my camcorder couldn't focus on moving objects that far away so it searched in and out - very little usable footage. Other than that, I love using the WA lens as it gives more of a real feeling to the video - like the human eye, to me anyhow.
I don't have an HD system, just a HC-42.
my latest video, using that wide angle: Diving Catalina - Aug 2008 on Vimeo
depth was 30-50', vis was 40-60', only natural light.
