What's up.. Just had an impulse an decided I want to pick up SCUBA as a hobby. I'm pretty stoked about trying everything out. I bought all of the basic snorkel gear and waiting to take the PADI course. So far I have a pair of used Apollo Bio-Pro fins, Cressi 5mm full suit, aqualung dry flex snorkel, Aerial Coral mask, some good sturdy dive boots and gloves...

Pretty stoked far this whole SCUBA thing. If I get proficient enough I'll start buying some of the actual scuba gear.

Congratulations! Scuba is a great hobby. I am pretty new to the underwater world but it is amazing. Once you get certified you may find that your proficiency will increase with your own equipment. I used rental gear for several dives and it was okay but when I got my own gear it fit correctly every time and made it easier to have fun because I was not always messing with the gear.

Either way, I hope you have a great experience!

Is "SD" San Diego? South Dakota? I'm waiting to take my PADI OW class too, scheculed for next week. I'm in SD (San Diego) too.

Hopefully you don't get too cold in a 5mm. You should probably rent one before taking the 5mm in the ocean that way you can return it if you get too cold.

Welcome to Scuba!- you will love it whether you are from San Diego or South Dakota( the water is a lillte cool in both places). As to gear, quality used fins and exposure gear is just fine, but you may want to think about getting a mask that is new and fitted to you. When it comes to regulators, computers, gauges, and bcd's etc, I really recomend new stuff, even though I do not own a shop or manufacturer, and do not sell scuba equipment. Here is why: 1) it is fitted to you; 2) most nerw equipment comes with one or two yers of free servicing, and that is important (and valuable); 3) you will have to pay to have any used gear inspected and repaired or serviced as appropriate, adding to the cost and making it not quite the bargain you thought; 4) propely working equipment is REALLY important. 5) even top-of-the-line stuff can turn into junk if neglected and not properly serviced and maintained -think used cars, except your life depends on the constant reliability of the scuba gear. 6) People who own their own quality gear are more likely to be active divers, and everyone should be an active diver. You don't need to get everything at once, but you will want to, I'm sure. Have a lifetime of teriffic (and safe) diving!

Wow thanks for all of the advice. Hopefully I should be going through a divemaster course over the next 6-9 months for free thanks to military tuition assistance. They have a dive shop on base that will take you from OW all the way to DM for free.

First your on the right track. If your interested in diving or not. Either way you'll discover once you experience scuba diving. You've got good some motivation from the army. That's a start.

Take the advantage and do all the courses you can. It's a door opening as a hobby or a future career.

For now.

Have fun and dive every given chance!!!
