Hey all,

I am new to the world of scuba diving and quite eager to get things going when it warms up in a few months. I haved lived with a peculiar trepidation toward the ocean most of my life, but now ready to vanquish that fear by learning to dive. Any and all words of encouragement or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Finally, I might be opening a can of worms here, but . . . when it comes to online courses, which do more prefer and why: PADI or SDI?

Welcome. It's a bit of a drive for you, BUT there are a lot of us who dive Haigh Quarry in Kankakee. When you're ready, put up a post and you'll find a lot of people willing to dive with you.

Martin, welcome to ScubaBoard. It's great to see you've found such a great resource when you are just getting started, I know I've benefited from it.

If you research your question on ScubaBoard, you will find plenty of opinions regarding the different agencies and online vs. LDS (local dive shop) learning.

For getting started, I would suggest starting here.

Again, welcome, and if you have any questions all you need to do is ask here on ScubaBoard.
