I sent an email to the web sight in the above post.Im trying to put together a trip for a group of divers but am having a hard time justifying the cost. Is it really worth it?
Flight from nebraska to Guayaquil 2k, park fees and some other tax 110, one night in Quito 100 plus some food? flight to Galapagos another 500, cost of liveabord 5k plus tip, in other words 8 grand for maybe if were lucky 15 dives? WOW

Sorry, but just have to answer this. No one charges (nor quotes) $500 (it's usually around $400) for flights to Galapagos and only the Aggressor's Master cabin is up to $4995. Plus, we always have up to the minute discounts available posted on our website under Promotional Departures. There are currently Buy 5, Get 1 Free, 10-15% discounts, free flight offers and more. At times, there are even 2 for 1 offers. Flights from Nebraska at $2K? Wow. We don't handle international flights, but did you check American? They tend to have pretty good fares.

Doesn't sound like it came from us, but if it did, I'd love it if you forwarded it to me. $500 flights? Email leslie@divethegalapagos.com

But yes, the Galapagos is worth it. Why else would it be so expensive and yet always be mostly full on 5 liveaboards? And for most, it is a once-in-a-lifetime trip that, if you look through these forums, ends up being the most memorable dive trip of their lives.

Maybe this will force the Galapagos liveaboards to lower their prices. $5000 for 15 dives

Glad I went last year before these changes (although last year was too warm and did not have as many big schools of sharks / fish).

...well, when you add in all the additional 'real-world' costs on a week-long Galapagos liveaboard trip, I can easily see (for the average North American diver) the entire tab running in the $ 7000 - $ 8000 range, divided into 15 dives comes to $ 500 per dive!

...and now that you mention you got unlucky about the water temps and had a 'substandard' trip experience as a result, would it have made better sense to blow $ 8000 on maybe (4) separate $ 2000 trips or (3) $ 2500 trips and reduce your risk exposure to unfortunate/substandard dive conditions ? Blowing $ 8000 on only 5 days of diving is just WAY too risky in my book...just sayin'.

Do you know of anywhere else you can swim through a couple hundred hammerheads to chase a 50+ foot long whale shark? And then there are giant mantas, Galapagos Sharks, Silky sharks, dolphins, sometimes Orcas, penguins, enormous free swimming morays, huge schools of jack thick enough to blind you to whale sharks, schools of tropicals, so many sea lions and turtles you forget they count...and that's a couple of days. Throw in some of the western sites once again on itineraries and add mola molas to the mix, steaming volcanic vents under the water, flightless cormorants diving and, well, that is what ends up making it worth the price and trouble. It's not just good diving, it's incredible diving. How can any diver not want to go there?

You might say I'm not objective and you would be absolutely correct. Unlike others, we don't sell the world...we only sell Galapagos. Why? No place else on earth anything like it. People go back and back to some places because they're cheap. I doubt there's anyone who has dived the Galapagos who wouldn't love to go back, and many do, and not because it's cheap. Oh, and the topside's not too shabby either.

And ps...those numbers are inflated. You can do it for $5500 including flights, hotels on the mainland, etc. Look for specials and it can cost even less. So then you're talking closer to $325 per dive. You could go dive in the Atlanta Aquarium with a whale shark. That's $300. I hear it's 40 feet deep. Seems so sad to have a whale shark kept in such a confined space. But I digress...

Look, I'm the first to help people find the best deals there are and yes, even the best deals equal expensive relative to other destinations. But I can't see going more often to somewhere less desirable trumps the experience you carry with you for the rest of your life. Kinda like saying wouldn't you rather have four 1980 Ford Escorts than one 2011 Audi Q5 isn't it?

One thing that has to be thrown in the mix is the fact that at ANYTIME the authorities could decided to take away the permits again as they did a few years ago with no notice and you have no trip! I know I was supposed to go on the Deep Blue a few years ago when it all got cancelled with a few days notice. I vowed then that I would not give such a corrupt 'national park' one of my hard earned cent's!

Heh guys, even though I am a competitor in business to Dive the Galapagos, I cannot fault her knowledge and passion about Galapagos. Galapagos is only one of the worldwide destinations we service and if you count a per dive cost, it probably is the most expensive ! But having made well over 3000 dives to some of the best destinations on the planet, Galapagos is still amongst the top of my list. So what is the decision, do you go for 100 dives @ $100 per dive that are nice but not over the top, or do you make the decision to climb to the Everest base Camp of diving and save your bucks to make a dozen dives that may live in your memory for a lifetime. I understand both points of view but having been privileged to dive some of the best the world can offer, gives me the perspective that Galapagos is a unique adventure and you may not be able to afford to go there often, but how many once in a lifetime trips can one do in a lifetime anyway !
