I think it's a fine idea. I'd take some care in selecting who the rental gear comes from. Ideally you will want to target your LDS where you'll get good to excellent service on it (and future gear) - or at least it's supposed to work that way (ask around for LDS reputation - maybe post it here on this board?). Used training / rental gear is popular, so be patient and wait for the right gear - don't rush it.
