We start with the fact that there aren't many divable waters in the Denver area. Then we add to the fact that some are closed in the winter. Finally we deal with the fact that Denver is a lot warmer than a lot of people think, so there really isn't much ice. Consequently, there is not much ice diving in the Denver area.

If you want some ice diving, Turquoise Lake in Leadville is a good choice, if you don't mind diving in extreme cold at over 10,000 feet altitude. You can go to Jefferson Lake, too, but you would have to haul your gear quite a ways up a closed, snow packed road and then dive at 10,600 feet.

Hi All,

Finally getting certified and taking my 14 year old daughter with me. Our pool training is the next two weekends, then I think we are going to go to Florida for open water certification.

Looking forward to getting some good advice here!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Scuba Diving...

My daughter and I did our classes at the same time too. Since then we have had many wonderful diving vacations togeather...it will be something the two of you can do togeather for a lifetime. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome. My first class is this afternoon and I am excited! I would love to do my OW checkout dives in Cancun or Cozumel, but if there is a cheap flight down there, I have not found it. I can get into Fort Lauderdale for $288 direct and have contacted a couple of dive shops in Key Largo based on some reading on this forum.

As to diving in Denver, I grew up in Miami and sadly never got around to getting certified there, so I feel I have to do my OW dives in warm water...

Great forum! Thanks,
Drake

Welcome Drake,
Ocean First in Boulder routinely runs short trips to the keys.

Hello Drake.... Charlie here, from Arvada. I have been out of diving for the past 12 years... but am getting back into it. My girlfriend is getting certified now.. her first pool class is tomorrow night.. with Coral Key Scuba. We will be hitting Isla Mujeres soon for her Open Water referral. Looking forward to it. Nice to see some other CO divers here. I am new to the forum too...

Welcome to you Clownfish!

I booked my dive trip to Florida. Will be doing the OW Checkout dives with Quiescence in Key Largo.
