A doctor that dives a lot recommended that I buy a hypoallergic hand disinfectant product (liquid) with some moisturizing agent in it (glycerin, I think it tends to be). Rinse your ears with it after diving and it will both disinfect & moisturize (dry canals get irritated more eaisily). My friends and I have used this idea about 6mos now & we have found it very helpful.
I also keep my ears dry when possible by using earplugs when I shower or swim laps. Between normal showers & swimming 1-3x a week my ears would get wet ridiculously often and this used to cause trouble long before I started diving.
Also: I've learned to never, ever ever put anything in my ear. The health professionals always told us this, but you need to truely accept & obey it. I know it seems like a Q-tip would dry that water out just perfectly, but occasionly it's going to cost you a sore ear or ever-worsening water problems. Start believing the professionals' advice sooner not later and you will spend less time being unable to dive.
