Congrats on your new addiction. Wish I was out there, Boulder City was home for a long time (I still miss it). Which shop are you using and where are you doing your checkout dives?

I am looking also to be certified in the next few weeks. My best friend has been trying to get me certfied for years now and since a recent trip to the Bahamas snorkling, I have the itch in a bad way. I also live in Las Vegas. Get in touch with me and maybe we an set something up for later in the summer once I am certified. BTW where are you going for you classes and how do you feel about them. I just stopped by both Desert Divers and Sport Chalet earlier today and another one last week but cant recall the name of the shop (off Spring Mtn rd.)

I thought there was just the one dive shop in Vegas? A Padi 5 star... picture of the owner (?) wearing red panyhose. After speaking to them, I actually left scared for any of their students!

hey all first off i have to say that towards the end of july i'll be gone outta the country for a good three months afterwards i'll love diving afterwards though. as for my certification im going through the sport chalet in summerlin, they only charge $145 for the certification but then you have to buy your snorkeling gear for appx $150/200 and also had to purchase the padi course material and "pit" card which altogether was like 75. for what its worth sport chalet had nice facilities and they have like 10 seperate instructors so yeah thats my two cents

also for our open water dives were going to the scuba park at lake mead

I go to Vegas a couple times a year. When I asked some of my fellow club members about diving in Vegas, they laughed. Is there a place on Lake Meade (I assume that's where you go) to dive? Can you get me more specifics about it? Don't have a trip planned yet, but working on it. A couple hours in the water is a whole lot cheaper than at the casino :bubble_fi .

no joke Frog, anything you can go out and DO is always less expensive than the casino's-LOL!

bremen66-good luck with your trip. I may have my cert before you leave but my schedual is crazy. Keep in touch through this board and maybe we can set something up when you get back to Vegas. Thanks for the 2 cents- from looking at my schedual and what all these shops offer schedual wise I may end up at the shop on Spring Mtn. I like thier facility and the instructor was really willing to work with me. My friend is gonna help me get going as well. I agree with you on the Sport Chalets facilities.

i was looking online and lake mead has quite a diverse environment to dive in from caverns, numerous wrecks, and various environments unique to the lake

really? When at the above mentioned shop, I asked where they go diving and they replied "So Cal" supposedly the vis sucks in mead and theres nothing to see anyhow...I may have to take my gear on my next trip out there.

Lake Mead actually has a scuba park. There's not much to it. They can take some lessons from other scuba parks. The viz can be anywhere from 0 to 50', depending on when you go. There are a few wrecks in the lake, most accessible by boat only. The lake level being down so much (about 70' now) hasn't done much for the popularity of the lake. A better option would be to drive down to Lake Mohave. The viz is usually around 30' and you can get decent depth off the shore in the different coves. There are also wrecks there - boats, a bus, etc - but they're not marked. You just need to look for them. It helps to talk to people who have dived there and know the general vicinity. We went to Mead for the first time a few months ago and hit Mohave on the way back home and were sorry we wasted time at Mead. We'll be at Mead again at the end of the month (on the way to and from Vegas), and then probably a few more times this year. If anyone wants to meet up with us any of the trips, let me know.
