I am almost done with my part one and want to book a trip to do my checkout dives. I live in Minnesota and it's too cold here so I am wondering where I should go? I am traveling alone.

Thanks

Eric

Wow Eric,

You have a ton of choices. All depends on your checkbook/ billfold or credit card limits.

You can do a refferal and most all dive shops that are agency related will work with you.

If you'd like to come to Florida and dive in the springs, you're wlcome to come into Jacksonville and join in with my students. All you'll need is a weekend.

Regards,
Bob C

I just finished my classroom/pool portion - i'm heading down to Key Largo early Feb to finish it up.

I should have also put that I am looking for a place that has beaches and some nightlife. I am not loaded but not broke either.

You can do affordable on Roatan. Stay on/near the West End for nightlife. The good beaches are in West Bay although Half Moon Bay isn't too bad either. We dove with Coconut Tree Divers - they can handle your check-out dives and will show you some really good diving in the area. Info about the area: Bay Islands Diver Home

Nassau might be another option. Stay on Cable Beach (or Atlanti$) and dive with Bahama Divers. Will most likely see some sharks during the week. There's a lot of shallower dive sites nearby including some wrecks.

Another option might be Curacao. Most of the resorts in town have affiliated/on-site dive operators (at many it's Ocean Encounters), there's the Dive Bus for escorted shore diving and I think the diving there actually is a little better than Bonaire - the recognized shore dive capital of the Caribbean (and maybe the world). Since Willemstad is a bigger town, there's clubs, beach bars, casinos i.e. nightlfe - we look for that also.

Thought about Maui?

Not Maui and have already been to Curacao. Nassau might be the route to go. Don't know much about Roatan.

Is Cozumel an ok place to learn?

I think Mexico is hit and miss (much more so than in the US). I was on a dive recently in Mexico where instructors and students were in my group and I was appalled at how poor the instructor was, however this was not in Cozumel. Perhaps this could have been a very isolated incident, perhaps not.

Probably your best bet is to

1. get some advice on scubaboard (which you are doing)
2. ask your OW1 instructor for advice, and possibly referrals to other students that may have done OW2 in Mexico.

Lastly, when you are doing your OW2 in Mexico (or anywhere), be safe. If the instructor starts dropping down too deep, you don't have to follow.
