When I purchase a regulator I look at 3 things, how easy does it breath, how easy can I obtain service for it (home and abroad) in case something goes wrong and will it fit into my diving style (cold, warm, deep, etc).... The initial purchase is one thing, getting it serviced every year is another. Ask you LDS if you can demo a few models before you make your decision.

Everyone I know who dives a Dacor brand reg loves their reg. However they do all the service work themselves and stockpiled parts right after Mares purchased the company. Where you are located or heading--will you be able to get your reg serviced? I would suggest going to Diver's Direct and seeing what they have or going to one of the smaller LDS's and see what they sell. So the short answer is stay away from the Dacor unless you can get it serviced.

"You're gonna DIE, if you don't buy a Super, Improved, Scandium, Premier. . .whatever". If you buy new in the United States, you're gonna get a good regulator. There are so many sharks at the courthouse, nobody can afford to throw something together. How many bells and whistles, and high style fashion stripes you want to pay for is the big difference. Under the cover, most regulators are using designs that are as old as you. Within each company, adjustments can be made for comfort, or suitability to a special purpose. I've dove with two hose, and many of the single hose offerings. . . they're all good, and if maintained, safe. The old Dacors were built like a cannon ball. . . very dependable, heavier than most, and now parts are long gone. Someone else mentioned several long standing brands. . . this probably means you can parts in the future. Finding a trustworthy local dive shop will be your best protection for future maintainence.

Don't worry. . . They all blow bubbles.
