Greetings. I will be finishing my PADI Advanced Open Water cert on Oct 13th. I have done my Open Water and Advanced since I have been stationed here at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, Africa. Diving in the Gulf of Tadjoura is very good. I will also be diving in Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean in Feb 2011.

I've been wanting to visit Djibouti for years, and now you say you have diving too? Fantastic.

What's the place like above sea level?

Hot! Hot, is what it is like! Definitely desert country, very impoverished, but the people are nice and there are lots of good restaurants. Diving is very good!

I was deployed there in 2006. Actually deployed out of there... I didn't spend much time in DJ.

I do remember that it was a major hassle at that time for folks to get passes to go off of Camp Lemonade :D for any reason. Has that changed now?

But hot? Oh, yeah... I've never felt anything like that in my life...

Yeah, it is much easier now to get passes off base. Still involves the usual amount of paperwork, but is definietely doable on a consistent basis.
