Hello,

First I apologize because it seems this is a common question..

Today I had my first dive in the ocean, nothing alarming happened and my instructor said we did great. However, this evening I am feeling some soreness in my chest. It is mainly when I take a deep breath. It's not very painful, just a tad uncomfortable.. Definitely tolerable. Is this common, on account of using new muscles? A tad soreness in my back from the weight of the BCD as well.

After my first day of diving I found my lower back was very stiff, it was from me trying to keep awesome trim and on account of me like never using the muscles I was using. Can't say I had chest sores though.

Hi Kalys, I'm way too new to give advice, everyone must be out diving. I do remember being stiff also at first. It was much more strenuous than I expected with schelping gear and tanks. If it persists of course see a dr - you know...

Sore back think I've heard of. Chest, no. But who knows, you could've unknowingly strained something.

i know this is old news but if your not feeling better by now you should consult with your doctor...good luck and keep us informed.

Thanks everyone, it just have just been a strain as I am feeling great today!

Ready to go again!

Good to hear you are feeling better - I know my first few dive I had aches in places I hadn't realised were places!

I generally feel fewer aches with each new dive I do.

See a doctor is good advice.

What kind of dive was it? If you had to help carry your tanks to and from the water or boat. If you were on a boat and had to climb a ladder. If you had to rig up on the ground so you had to hoist up your gear to put it on. If you had to pull yourself along a line while in the water. If you do a lot of swimming with your arms on the dive.... There are lots of ways to strain the chest muscles especially if they are not used a lot.

You are using new muscles and will have odd aches and pains in the beginning. My arches used to get terribly sore after a single dive, apparently I kept clenching my feet as though I needed to try to hold onto my fin. My calf muscles used to seize up frequently, and my back thought a single 12L tank was just ungodly heavy. I wasn't in bad shape but just using different muscles or using them in new ways.

Probably not relevant since your arches are better, but I used to suffer from Plantar Faciitis until I started wearing lifts in my shoes. Then my wife found these stap-like lifts that fit around the small of the foot and were perfect for inside dive booties. Don't need those anymore since I'm not DMing anymore thus not walking around all day in booties.
