Hi there!

I have a question coming from a new diver and please keep in mind that I have never rented equipement before.

My cousin and I are both certified. I'm PADI and he's ACUC. We are planning on taking a last minute type trip to Cuba or somewhere else in the caribbean.

Unfortunately, My cousin lost his membership card. Will this pose a problem if we want to rent equipment?

-Can I rent for both of us with my card?

-Is there a database that a place can check for his name?

-Does anyone have average rental prices for the Caribbean?

Thanks in advance!

Lee

This is my first post on this forum.

Life-saving (tanks, BCs, and regulators) rental equipment can/are subject to liability issues if the shop rents to a non-certified person; that's the point of producing the c-card. I have no idea about Cuba, but most Caribbean shops want some proof of certification. A lost ACUC card should be quickly and easily replaced; your cousin will need it to dive from a boat in addition to renting equipment.

You can take Dandy Don with you. He's sneaky and knows how to do it. I couldn't do it and wouldn't bet on it...

Poor Don,,, he's always getting dissed! :05:

Seriously, 99.9% chance they will ask for a card.

You could try and skirt the system and rent for him or whatever, but you may run into difficulties. Best bet is to try and get a replacement.

When was the last time your friend dove? If it's been a while, are you sure you want to help him out?

Sssshhh, Kevfin. I'm trying to do him a favor here. Cuba. Naked Newcasters. Cockroaches. It would be a dream come true for him. And he has the right hat for the job.

It's been about a year since his last dive.

I made sure he did my old tests and he re-read our books.

Most of the all inclusive hotels in cuba have a free inroductory lesson to scuba that we may take advantage of to refresh what ever info we forgot over the fall.

It's just that we found a hell of a last minute deal and he wont have the time to recieve his replacement card.

Sounds dandy...:blinkinge

I have managed it a couple of times, however it was generally an oversite by the operator and when I forgot the damn thing on a holiday. Now is on the checklist - credit cards, dive card, got everything I need:D

One time dove with an outfit that didn't ask, wish they had - terrible experience. Another time got in a long dive related conversation and was never asked, I think he just forgot that he hadn't asked.

By and large you will be asked, and you won't be allowed to dive without it except as a resort course or introductory dive.

In Cuba you might have a better chance than other places, it was pretty laid back last time I was there, but that was quite a while ago.

Any of your regular dive buddies look a bit like your cousin. :D

I've never been asked for a second form of ID. DD doesn't have a monopoly on sneaky.

Come to think of it, some dive boats never asked for my card. I just had to write the cert agency and the number on the ship manifest & liability form.
