I pack everything in soft bags, pad it and check it. Always have. Never a problem and I know it's done properly so don't worry. Even with security digging around in there I've had no problems with things out of place and at risk. It could all go wrong, but that's what insurance is for and I hate dragging stuff through airports. ymmv & each to his/her own.

I used the 1510 for my old Oly Setup. Since I upgraded to the DSLR, it is way too small, esp for the dome port. Moved to a hard case (1610) for check-in. As Pakman puts it, WAYYY overweight, but nothing you can do about it. Just have to hope the frequent flyer membership extra weight allowance is enough.

pakman:
Plus the 1510 empty is HEAVY!

My Storm IM2400 weighs 7.8 pounds empty.
My Storm IM 2500 with wheels weighs 12.7 pounds empty.

A soft case weighs less than 2 pounds empty, for carry-on of course.

Well, my sister called me to let me know that all went well with the flight test on the Seahorse case. No one questioned it and it fit easily into the overhead. So far, so good.

This case was quite a bit larger that both the Pelican and Storm cases. It is a bit lighter also. Yes, it will violate all airlines policies for weight when loaded with camera gear, but I have gotten good at making it look light as I heft it around. I simply tell the flight attendant that the hernia I just got did not come from hefting it into the overhead.

I will be putting pics on, as soon as I figure out how.

On several occasions, my box was gate checked, but it goes directly into the hold, with no time for pilferage. I would hate having a soft case thrown in there under my hard case.

so does the 1510 or 2500 fit into the airline overhead compartment or it needs to go through the baggage compartment?

I too have a pair of Seahorse cases, the big ones.

These have so far survived 6 flights, loaded up at 69.4 pounds.

I had initial reservations about the plastic, it seems harder and more brittle than what's used for Storm and Pelican, but it's doing good so far.

All the best, James

When you are overweight on the new limits you are just charged extra but they still let you take the baggage, right? I don't see how I can even come close to the limits I see to get to Fiji. As long as I carry a heavy wallet I will be OK?

Unfortunately, no. Some airlines/flights, you can't take more than your allowed weight limit, period. Check with the airlines before you go.

PS, I weigh less than 150 pounds, dripping wet, with all my clothes on. Somehow it doesn't seem fair that I get the same luggage allowance as a passenger who is twice my size!

I have flown all kinds of flights overseas with my gear. Usually, if you are overweight on your carry-on you just have to gate check it. I have never been charged for it as the gate does not have any way to collect money. Just be careful not to let the check in people to see it. On checked bags, they can charge you or not allow it on the plane. On Quantas once, I was made to take 1 kilo out of a bag. That was 1 book and two pairs of socks. I had to put it in my gear bag. No price for the overweight, I was told the bag would NOT be put on the plane...period.
