some are more adept at picking up skills than others but the default must be the ability to respond under stress and task loading - i personally think the pass mark for some courses is too low but there has to be a line somewhere. Im old enough to take personal responsibility to heart and regardless of my certification, I must make those judgement calls.

I'd advocate for more cross credits on course -eg shooting an SMB and mask clearing when youve already done it 4 courses ago is ridiculous. Spend more time on skill relevant to where your at is more beneficial

I just received a Nerd 2 with a sidewinder that is fischer. I'll come back to report my results. I have a second petrel 2 with a fischer as well.

As for the original post, it makes me think there could be a solution to this problem as shearwater advances. They could come up with something potentially to correct for this. Imagine using a few different shearwaters that all communicated with each other somehow like our apple watches, iphones, ipads and macs do. What if an account was created and my petrel sent info from my dive in the morning to my NERD 2 on surface interval so that my second dive accounted for tissue saturation?

I usually try to do one long dive a day in the caves but if I was an instructor this would be a nice feature.

His Nerd is a CanBus version. Mike built him a molex cable for his sidekick.. he used to use the Fisher cable, but now uses the CanBus.

no, he does not. His NERD is an analog NERD using the 4-pin subconn cable. This is a similar cable to the 5-pin cable used in the DiveCAN, but he does not have a canbus monitor on his unit. There is no room in the sidekick head for the board and battery.
I seem to remember that the NERD2 can be converted from Fischer to Subconn with a cable swap. The Petrels can't be, but I'm pretty sure the NERD and NERD2 can be.

Now what Mike SHOULD do is copy Dive Rite's canister system thingy and start making an option for that. Canister has the OBOE board and a 9v or 18650 battery that powers it and then he could actually start using DiveCAN computers, but we shall see if that ever happens.

What advantage would there be to having a NERD with a Subconn connector as a Monitor that relies on an OBOE board and a battery versus a NERD with a Subconn connector that uses an analog connection directly to the O2 sensors?

It seems like the difference would be having an OBOE board and (maybe) another battery versus having 0 - 3 splitters on the O2 sensor connections.

Richard Morton (Shearwater service guy) told me that there were some issues with using splitters years ago, but there's no problem with that now. So, I feel like I would rather rely on some very simple splitters than rely on an OBOE board and battery.

Or, even better, have more than 3 O2 sensors and not even have splitters....

A buddy with an X CCR went to Bikini last year. His X only has 3 sensors. Soon after his arrival, one of his sensors went out. It turned out that the connector had corroded and no amount of De-oxit or other efforts was able to get that connector working again. Of course, he had spares of many things, but not a spare of that. So, he had to choose between diving with 2 working sensors or diving OC.

He used to tease me about the 5 sensors in my rEvo being overkill and completely unnecessary, but I haven't heard a peep about that since then... Meanwhile, I have had 1 sensor get damp and start giving flaky readings during a day's diving. With 4 other sensors all reading the same as each other, the 1 flaky one didn't affect my diving in even the tiniest way.

On the analog versions, the calibration data is stored in the computer. While you can move the computer from one to the other, it will hold the original calibration data which obviously makes it pointless.
On the DiveCAN versions, you can move a monitor from one unit to the other and it will function as normal since the calibration data is stored in the OBOE.

@tbone1004 That seems like SUCH a niche case. I get it. But, certainly for where I am at, the benefit is moot. The benefit of less electronics and batteries is much better for me.

Anyway, it seems like if you were going to have 2 CCRs in the water, you might want to just have a separate NERD for each?
