My husband and I are planning a live aboard vacation in November, it will be our first time on a live aboard. Any recomendations, all comments welcome. :06:

Figure out everything you think you will need and leave half of it at home! A few t-shirts, swimsuits and a couple of pairs of shorts is all you'll need. I have been on 6 live aboards taking half as much stuff each time and I still brought too much clothes on the last one.
You will love the trip. Eat, sleep, dive, not exactly always in that order but enough of everything except sleep in my case.
I've never done the Nekton but I sure would.

My wife & I are headed out on the Nekton Roqual tomorrow :dazzler1: , look for a trip report in a little over a week.

I already pack that way, each time I take out more stuff. I like the idea that no dress cloths required. Thanks for the imput I'll certainly keep that in mind when I pack. Who knows it might be the first time for my suit case to be under 50lbs.

We did the Nekton Pilot to the Cay Sal Banks a couple years ago and had a GREAT time. I took a bikini for each day so I could change into a dry one while hanging out on the deck if we decided on a long surface interval. A small bottle (I use the mini "sports bottle" type you find in the make-up area at the store) of Ivory dish soap or Woolite comes in handy to wash the salt out of your suit at the end of the day. Hang it upstairs with your wetsuit and it will dry quickly. I think I took 2 tank tops and 2 pairs of shorts plus one "travel" outfit for the trip to Ft. Lauderdale to catch the boat as well as the trip home. There are some board games and videos on board as well as fish i.d. books so you don't have to bring your own although you can. The Pilot also had a small library of books to read, I'm guessing the Rorqual probably does too. I think some people bring a paperback to read then leave it on the boat when they're finished.

They shoot a video during the course of the trip and although it's expensive (I think ours was $50) it's worth it if you get some face time with the camera. Do something interesting if you see them with a video camera, blowing air rings, etc. seems to do the trick :D They did have a few souveniers that they sold the last day (including the video) so take some extra cash along.

We asked the Chief Engineer for a tour of the engine room and he took us after we trotted off to get our shoes. That was REALLY cool since the engines are in the pontoons. I have a really good picture of the CE sitting beside one of the engines.

BTW, even though they bill it as the "no seasick" boat if you're prone to getting sick take precautions. The male of the other couple we traveled with got so sick they had to send the Coast Guard helicopter to pick him up off of the boat then he spent 3 days in ICU at Fisherman's Hospital on Marathon Key.

Hope you have as much fun on your trip as we had on ours! (Without the excitement of watching a helicopter pickup)

my rule of thumb is:

cut what you think you'll need by two thirds and double your money

I did the Nekton Rorqual July 2002 and had a fantastic time. I was traveling as a single, so they always had a crew member go with me as a buddy if I didn't know as a 3some with 2 guys. I did my first night dive with these folks and it was awsome. Crew member asked me ahead of time exactly what I was comfortable doing and she kept right to my requests. Food was fantastic. I lucked out because I signed up as a single and never had to pay the supplement and they couldn't find a roommate for me so I had my own cabin - got spoiled.

Have a good time and post a trip report no matter where you go.

Andy is right, I forgot about doubling the money!
I really have spent less then I budgeted on almost every liveaboard but hanging out at the bar on shore Friday after the trip has been a killer!!!

Scuba Star and I were on the Rorqual June 26-July 3. This was my first liveaboard. The crew was great and a lot of fun. We did about 17 dives that week. As far as what to take, my suggestion is several bathing suits, sandals, shorts, tank tops, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a few t-shirts. If you don't want to rent, take your scuba gear. The Nekton people supply towels and bath soap. Once I get money saved up I hope do sail and dive with them again.
