Please join us for a fun night at the NeighborHeart® Prom on May 30, 2008 in the Grand Ballroom of the Philadelphia Marriott. The benefits support the Quality of Life Grant Program for autistic children, adults, and their families (watch our video) in the mid-Atlantic region of the US.

The NeighborHeart® charity is making a difference through awareness, compassion, and better quality of life. We’re working hard to educate the public, break down the barriers, and dispel the myths about autism, but it can’t be done without your help. If you live, work, or will be visiting the Philly area on May 30, please consider attending this worthy event. After all, the more the merrier! And SB'ers know how to have fun!

This is a great cause! I hope you get some SBers in the area to attend.

Autism affects so many, much more than the general public realizes.

Someone told me in a discussion about this on a plane flight yesterday that autism now affects one out of every 240 kids. Is that correct?

Also, I saw Jenny McCarthy on Larry King the other night talking about how her son seemed to develop autism after getting a fever subsequent to some shots at the doctor's office, and that the number of shots that a kid is required to get now is a lot more than when we were kids. (I am 46.)

Actually, autism affects one out of every 150 kids now. There's a wide range/spectrum of autism. There's tons of myths about it.

I would suggest watching this video... it's short and gives insight to what families with autistic members deal with.

My niece is currently undergoing a battery of tests to determine if she is autistic. So far, things are leaning toward the fact that she is. The diagnosis would certainly explain alot and give my sister a starting point on how to better care for her daughter (therapies, physicians, etc.)

No one knows for sure what causes autism. The research is ongoing. Some studies relate the onset of autism to the battery of thimerosal (contains mercury and is used as a preservative) laden vaccines children receive these days. However, this has not been conclusively proven.

    Thanks for your interest.

Your right.....autism now affects 1 out 150 kids. Some of this can probably be attributed to more awareness on the part of pediatricians who are are learning what to look for, but, there is no doubt that autism is occurring more and more!

One thing I know for sure. If you don't already know someone affected by autism you will soon.
