I just don't log dives
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, but here goes: I want to buy, (not $240.00 either) borrow, or rent the book "Hailstorm Over Truk Lagoon". My library can't even find one, and I won't spend the $240.00 from Barnes and Noble. Any suggestions or ideas?? Are there any alternative books that have historical and current information? I need it before Dec. when I'm heading that way.

Did you check on Amazon or other used booksellers? I'm surprised that a book I bought new for about $30 10 or 12 years ago goes for $240 now.

If you wait until you get there, you can buy it for about thirty bucks from the Blue Lagoon Resort (1999 prices) assuming they still carry it. They are on the web, maybe they can send you a copy.

They didn't have it last October when I was there.
Unless you want that book SPECIFICALLY, the alternative book has good information and is readily available:

"WWII Wrecks of the Truk Lagoon" by Dan Bailey

The book is out of print. The author, Klaus Lindemann , died a couple of years ago. I believe his family was trying to get the book back into print. Don’t know what the status is. I bought both the hardcover and soft cover back in the early 90’s. I paid something like $35 to $40 a piece for them. We had the fortune of meeting Klaus on two different trips to Truk and had Klaus sign them and a copy of Desecrate 1. I actually had another copy of Hailstorm over Truk Lagoon that we used as a reference copy. My wife gave it to a friend since we had two other copies. She thought we could just buy another one. When we started looking, we couldn’t find a copy anywhere. Hope you have better luck.

PS anothe good book is:Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon by William H. Stewart

I was searching for a copy myself. I found an order form with an email address at the bottom during a Yahoo! search. I thought I was emailing a company. It turned out to be Klaus' wife. Here's what she wrote me regarding "Hailstorm Over Truk Lagoon".

Dear Paula,
Thanks for your inquiry. Hailstorm Over Truk Lagoon, both hard and soft cover, are no longer available. My husband was working on the 3rd edition of the book when he died from a brain tumor. I understand that some people have been successful finding either the 1st or 2nd edition on ebay. I still have some of the dive slates, each representing a different ship and its highlights, depths, etc. Hailstorm the Dive Guide is still available through aquaquestcom.

Hey Barracuda,

If you are looking for a book that will really tell you a history behind it all (planning, fleet involved, logistics, wrecks, what was on them, etc) then get the book by Dan Bailey. It is only $70 plus shipping. It is called "World War II Wrecks of the Truk Lagoon"

I have been to Truk twice and both times I used that book to learn more about what ships we were diving on. It is an excellant resource and a great table top book too. Many of my friends when they come over and pick it up and ask me about it.

Here is a link for the site to buy it from Dan himself. He also has a great map of the Lagoon and wrecks.

I was out there a couple weeks ago. I have to say the Bailey book is by and far the best book you can get. _highly_ worth the price. Depending on where your going, you can probably get a copy out there, or have a copy there that you can use. I know the Odyssey has a couple copies, as well as selling signed copies.

There's another book that is pretty sweet for quick reference, but it's out of print so you'll just have to hope there is one you can reference when you are out there.

The Bailey book is an excellent reference- easily eaqual to the Lindeman (I have both). I would recommend picking up "Hailstorm- the dive guide"- apparently it is still available through aquaquest.com- it makes a nice quick reference.

Thanks all. I'm going to look into obtaining the Bailey book. Knowing all about wrecks before diving them just makes them come alive for me while diving them. I dove the U-352 only 5 yrs. after it was found off NC, before the Navy removed all the ordinance and sealed up the sub. I read about the background of the sub and the whole episode of her sinking. We were able to get into the forward torpedo room where I found the ball joint of a femur bone from one of the young crew members. Knowing what happened to that sub almost made that experience a spiritual one. I wanted to know all about that crew member and I was awestruck to think of what he went through. Wouldn't it be cool if you could take a recording of the history of a wreck with you as you dive? I remember going to a Titanic exposition and wearing headphones and player. I could stand in front each site and push some numbers into the player and I could hear all about that particular part of the tragedy. I want to know all I can about the 15 or so wrecks I'll be diving in Truk this Dec. Thanks again for all your replies.
