since our law changed it became useless since they force us to dive through dive centers and price of the air fill is almost the same as price of renting the cylinder. Our laws suck big time! (but I still go diving solo during winter)
why'd they put up a law like that? to protect commerce? to keep people from drowning themselves w/o DM supervision? wierd (no offense to your lawmakers)... i kinda understand regulatory laws that seek to protect the dive environment (dive fees, entry fees, dive seasons, etc.) but you can't use your own tank?

I could probably buy an AL80 at my destination and give it back to the shop when I left for not much more than the airline would charge me for transport.
if you come over here, i'll take that al80 off your back hehehehehe :eyebrow:

The LDS I go to most often is a 3 minutes away from my house. When I want a larger selection, I go to another store that is 15 minutes away. However, both stores are owned by the same person so i can drop of rented gear at either of them. The nearest dive site is 10 minutes away. How is that for convience?
not THAT is convenient! the only thing that should beat that is living on the beach or resort strip with a dive op downstairs and the water 20 feet away, and the reef 50 feet beyond that... kinda like the buggers here who live in galera and boracay (sigh...)

hahahahahaha

Hi Shugar,

I do most of my diving in Anilao too but I live in Hong Kong and am originally from the US. To compare to most of the diving in the US, and by the sounds of it many other locations, imagine that all the anilao resorts shut down but their sister dive shops in manila stayed in business. If we still wanted to dive we'd all end up doing the same thing they are doing in the states - renting tanks from Aquaventure, Scuba World, White Tip, etc. and heading down to Batangas or up to Subic for the weekend in our pickup trucks (ok, maybe some might rent jeepneys!)

This is just what it was like for people who were diving Anilao about 20 - 30 years ago (so my friends tell me). They would get all their stuff together in manila (tanks, food, etc.) and head off to Batangas for the weekend completely self sufficient. Imagine the whole day on a banca, especially during the 'winter' and having to warm up by lying next to the diesel engines - these guys really wanted to dive! I'm sure the appeal was that the fishermen and the bancas were already there so they had easy transportation and also tips on where all the good spearfishing was (no-no today though).

It seems that the shops in the US where there isn't much 'thrilling' diving take it for granted that it is a fairly small fringe activity and when someone has the time and money to spend a chunk of time diving they aren't likely to do it in a quarry! So, they cater to local divers who are heading out for day trips and are used to a more rugged situation that is much more likely to be dominated by independent groups of friends or dive clubs rather than trips to resorts. And then they organize annual trips to resorts where there is interesting diving. If you read anything about diving in North America you can't avoid hearing about . I've never been there but it seems like a lot of the divers in the cold parts of the states make it a yearly trip.

In my opinion the anilao resorts have a feel that is somewhere in between a 'real' hotel and roughing it. The resorts are pretty spartan but still nice, I certainly wouldn't call them fancy (except for Eagle point - yuck) but at the same time they have great food and friendly, homey service. Also, the surrounding town isn't exactly a big tourist destination - people going to mabini are generally there for one reason only - diving. Compare that to boracay, palawan, etc. It is a bit to me like going to summer camp - rugged enough but you don't have to cook for yourself or sleep outside for the weekend.

Maybe I'll see you in anilao one day :)

oops, I meant to put Cozumel in the 3rd paragraph as the place where loads of divers from N American go . . . damn computer gremlins :)

given that HK to manila is a shorter trip than makati to paranaque at rushhour i see why you take the trips hehehehe

seeing you in anilao one day -- COUNT ON IT! i'll give you a PM when next i'm up for a trip... w/c resort do you usually stay in? i'm a balai loyalist myself hehehehe

(and what's with eagle point? why the yuck?... haven't been there myself so wouldn't know)

first of all before this thread becomes too long and strays its path, to all you wet ones out there who put in their 2 (or more) cent's worth, thank a lot! this makes everything soooooo much clearer and me less of an ignorant fool...

BUT do keep it coming, this is really interesting and is a wealth of knowledge to me..

I usually go to Aquaventure but I've been to Balai and a few others over the years. Lots of nice places but I've gotten to know people at Aquaventure, and I like it there, so thats my usualy hangout. I've had a couple of bad experiences at Eagle Point and probably won't go back. I think it is overpriced, rude and there are much better dive ops down there. That's probably enough said! :)

My wife is originally from Batangas (Tanauan) but we all have been living in HK for quite a few years now. I'll probably be making a trip down sometime in November, most likely the end of the month, let me know if you are game for some dives!!

darn! i'd love to disappear from manila over the weekend... weather's been stupendous lately and my bodies been clamoring for salt water and nitrogen...

but alas, my wife is due with our 1st born (a girl!) around end november... she originally said i can have a christmas dive but that all depends hehehehe
