Hello all, I wanted to see if someone could give me some good suggestions on diving up in Washington. My brother is retiring from the Navy and I will be up in Washington from July 30th to Autust 3rd.

I wanted to check out the diving, as I'ver heard many good things about the diving up there. I am an AI from Monterey, CA, so I think my skills can take me just about anywhere up there.

Any suggestions on how to get the most out of 1-2 days of diving (probably Sat. and/or Sunday), and the best boat to jump off of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

That's a good week-end to see if you can book an afternoon charter ... what part of the area will you be staying in? If south Sound, perhaps try contacting Bandito Charter (http://www.banditocharters.com/bandito/) and see if they've got any space for a walk-on in the afternoon. With those low tidal exchanges, they are probably going someplace nice like Sunrise or Day Island Wall. If north Sound, you might want to contact Deep Sea Charters (http://www.deepseacruise.com/) or Lu Jac's Quest (http://www.lujacsquest.com/) to see if they've got any space for a San Juan trip ... Lu Jac's would send you to sign up with whomever has already chartered the boat that day.

To hook up with local divers for Monday or Tuesday, perhaps try northwestdiver.com.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not sure where I am staying, I just know I will be near the Navy ship yard, as I will be visiting my brother there. Any idea where that is?

BTW - I like the Jerry Garcia quote...I never knew he dove, but it goes right in line with his mentality....

Navy shipyard? That could be Bremerton--Bangor. If you are on the westside of Puget Sound. The Hoods Canal area would give you great diving. Sund Rock, Octopus Wall. You can contact Hoodsport n Dive for more in that area. They are just north of the town of Hoodsport.

I have a similar opinion of Pacific Adventure, but I think they (Don and Diane) do not have just a good charter, they have a great one. :) Of course opinions can vary, YMMV, and the rest of the usual disclaimers.

If you are going to be in Bremerton, the Hood Canal is a good place to go. Just so you don't get the wrong idea, the Hood Canal isn't really what I think of when talking about a canal, it isn't man made. It is a very large branch of the Puget Sound that is quite long. It is salt water with little if any current.
