hello all
been diveing 1 year now .I mostly dive drysuit. own my gear. aow c-card,ssi wreck card, nitrox card. the reason for the post is I have trouble keeping up with my buddy ,he claims my problem is my fins wich are aeris volicity . we took the debate to an lds he likes and the clerk agreed .showing me how my fin realy bends with out much effort and then showed a stiffer pair that took alot to bend them.is there any truth to what the clerk said about stiffness of the fin and drag with a drysuit .as i realy do not want to buy new fins ,as there are more equipment I want so I can expand my tech diveing .thanks for all your help.

It may not necessarily be your fins, but there can be a number of factors to consider. Have a look at your trim to see if you are horizontal in the water. A video or having someone look at you can tell lots. The less horizontal you are the more drag there will be. As well, consider the streamlining of your gear. The more that sticks out and drags will make you slower. As well, is your weighting proper? The more excess unnecessary weight you have, the less efficient you will be. As for fins, they can certainly make a difference, but I would have a look at your finning technique as well. Just a few points to consider.

I'd think that unless you aren't moving forward much at all when you kick, that your buddy needs to slow down. Have you ever dove with anyone else and if you did, did they also make it hard to keep up? Simple test: Swap fins with him on the next dive and if it is the fins he will constantly be trying to keep up with you. If he pulls away from you even slightly then it is him and not the fins that are to 'blame'.

What's the hurry? Not sure what kind of diving you're doing, but if you're zooming along, you're not seeing much. And you're sucking up more air. I agree with Sideband, your buddy is probably swimming too fast, not you too slow.

Actually, your BUDDY is the problem. You're not out to set an u/w speed record; you're out to enjoy the sights.

Tell him to get off the superhighway and onto the country road. That's what you're there for!

Bonne chance,

Exactly ... it's amazing what you can miss when you're motoring. Remember that even some of the big stuff out there is pretty good at camoflauge ... and if you go too fast you can swim by and never even see it.

Slow down ... you'll notice much, much more ...

Agreed, however if you DO want to set an u/w speed record and stay with him, get some long blade freediving fins. You can match him with less effort. They might even save you a bit on your car insurance (last statement is not true for all people). ;)

thanks for the input. I agree with all of you .have told buddy to slow down and enjoy.he likes to kick all the times ,were as I kick and glide.as for trim I do work on it and the weight ,I have dropped some lbs due to useing the correct amount of underware for my drysuit.

Scuba Diving is a slow walk in a flower garden or antique car museum. Take your time and Tell your buddy to slow down. If he tells you to speed up, find another buddy!
