my wife and i plan a trip in may to k.w. does anybody know of a little out of the way place to stay that has a good price. we would like to stay for 2 weeks. i.e. cabins or cotttages that are nice and clean.

I'm going to "hitch hike" on this thread... does anyone in Key West know Marc Hightower? I was his high school teacher and would like to get in touch with him if he is still there. He was a dive boat captain for a while and flies experimental ultralights.

TIA.

Hi Dump and welcome to the board. Unless you have your heart set on KW, you can find cheaper places (and better diving IMHO) farther up the Keys.

Dump,

You might check out spots like Lime Tree Inn (we did stay there) and maybe The Mermaid and the Alligator (nearby where we stayed).

Late August 2004, when Hurricane Frances required us to evacuate Key Largo after the first night there, we had the choice of joining the thundering herd from Miami north crawling at < 5 MPH, or, go south of mile marker 100 (as that was the line of demarcation for mandatory evacuation). We spent the rest of our vacation in Key West at Lime Tree Inn, and were able to switch our return flights, rental car return, etc. from Ft. Lauderdale airport to Key West with no extra charges due to the storm.

Subtropic and Captains Corner were the 2 dive shops we liked best of the ones we used in Key West. Captains Corner has the biggest boat in the area, and so will go out when smaller boats don't.

Have a great trip!

There are all kinds of great "no name" places to stay in Key West.

Last time we were there we stayed at "The Southernmost" and got royally screwed. We paid an extra $65/night for an oceanview room. Oceanview room to them means looking down the parking lot. We were about 20 rooms from the end of the hotel with the ocean. Even though their reservation desk had told us we would be "on the water", the hotel manager refused to make any attempt to fix the problem or refund the difference.

You also have to feed a meter on the street to park there.

So whatever you do, don't stay at this place or you will get screwed.

Hi,
We get to the Keys several times a year, and I hate "Key west" & my wife loves it, The Prices are so high and well worth it to the folks that have to stay in town!
We stay North like Tavernier area Its got some of the best Wrecks to dive close by,lots of dive shops and Key west is a short hop to do the day and get the heck out of town!
A few places we have been to : Dunns "Ocean View" This place has it all, A real local bar/with food,New,Neat& clean Rooms Tile with Great bathrooms, mini frige and micros in room,Great pool, and BBQ grill to cook days catch on in back,Lush tropical landscape and rates not bad for time of the year!=place only has like 10 some rooms-get one away from bar! The place rocks at night!
Tropic Vista has a dive shop, nice pool,newer dive boat,cooking in some rooms-Its older place but is for divers and owner is real nice to work with! the web site is ;
www.tropicvistadiveresort.com
rates are good and you will get a break on longer stays and dive pakages.
hope it helps have a fun trip.
Brad

thanks for the info now after reading this we may stay in the upper keys. does anybody know of a good place to stay there. thanks

I will be on Largo the 2nd week of march. Sea-dwellers has a package deal with the Holiday Inn, you can see it at http://www.sea-dwellers.com I have not dove with them before so I can't tell you anything about them although I have seen good reviews for them and excellent reviews for the hotel.

A friend and I dove with Sea-dwellers last Sept. Keep in mind that this was our first saltwater dive but we had a great time. Crew was friendly and knowledgeable, even helpful about where to eat. Hotel was clean and the price was good. Again, I don't really have anything to compare this to as it was our first dive trip, but I would probably go back.
