However you end up handling this, whether it's via your LDS or Scubapro, please do post an update in this thread. I'm especially curious to find out what Scubapro would have to say about two sketchy regs in a row. Good Luck.

uh, oh! Just had two of my Mk20 regs serviced and on the service note there was something about an upgrade - will have to check it out. Hopefully it was not this new "O" ring as they were serviced in the UK and are now back in Japan (got two complete sets serviced for the price of servicing just one first stage..)

I'll be listening....

The upgrade is to a MK25; apparently the MK20 is no longer sold. It is supposed to allow the user to easily change the IP... whether that is useful to you is open to debate.

The MK25 adjustment is NOT intended for the user to perform. The adjustment just makes it easier for the tech, it has no real benefit for the user.

Tell the local shop to put lots of christolube in the seat area. That "whistling sound" is the oring vibrating everytime the piston moves against it. SP regs are notorious for that whistling, or honking. Very annoying but isn't dangerous. Typically there is just enough lubricant on the piston or oring to save on wear.

If you don't like the service you are getting sent the reg to Tavernier Dive Center www.tavernierdivecenter.com. Mike is a master at working on SP regs. The Best i've seen.

All,

I just wanted to update the group on how the reg issue was handled. My LDS contacted SP and they confirmed that the o-ring needs to be changed if diving in warm water. They are sending the o-rings to the LDS. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I got the same problem with a whistling MK25/S600 (actually an upgraded MK20), and yes, I was diving in warm water (the Maldives). The whistling normally stopped after a few minutes diving as the kit cooled down. Jokes about "duck-hunting season" were rampant on the boat, and at lleast one diver "thought he heard dolphins" the first time he came out with us.

Changing the o-ring might well solve the problem for me in the Maldives, but since I dive in both warm and cold water I'm worried this might not be wise. Does anyone have any pointers to further information on the web about this problem? This thread is the only thing I have found, has Scubapro posted any 'official' statements?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Cheers,
Tony.

Yeah one of mine (of 3) started to "honk" on me. A good lubing seems to have fixed it. (High pressure piston O-ring) (The small one).

Of course, not being a ScubaPro fixer-god, Mine only works "almost heavenly".

hehehe

Sir, that the technician is able to control your regulator's IP better does benefit you.

Whistling is common on many pston first stages and the problem is almost always in an inadequately lubricated HP o-ring. Lots of lube on the o-ring between the bushings will resolve the problem on a Mk 15/20/25 while a liberal amounts of lube in the groove that holds the HP o-ring will solve the problem on the Mk 10 and Mk 10 Plus. The vibration that occurs resonates and can usually be felt quite strongly in the LP hose. I think there is more of a tendency to skimp on lube than in the past given the current emphasis on O2 clean regs.
