I saw 2 BCs and I wanted advice. Neither one is weight integrated. The one is a Sherwood that that was used as a rental inthe keys, but it looks to be in good shape. The other one is a fathom SL III that hasn't been used much. The fathom is supposed to have quite a few more features. I did a search and can't really find out mch about either one. He wants 25 for the sherwood or 75 for the fathom. Looking for some help.

I'm not familiar with either of those. Is there a reason why you're not looking at weight integrated? If you've never tried it, it is SSOOOOO much more comfortable than a belt!

A lot of divers don't use weight integrated BC's and consider it advanced or "tech". I used a belt for years. OK, unless you have to walk a lot with it on. Hard on the old hip joints.

If safe, a $25 BC is a no-brainer. That's the cost of renting on two dive days. If you don't like it, you can toss it and come out even. And, my Sherwood BC has been wearing like iron.

Have fun with it.

Yeah I would say try the sherwood out for now I use a sherwood Avid that is wt integrated and a Decor that is not. Try going to Leisurepro.com they have really good deals on dive equipment used and new. You can get a decent non wt integrate for a little more than 100 there. Good Luck B

First off, make sure you have a good, snug fit. You need the BC to hold the tank steady on your back, or you will be uncomfortable in the water. Second, if one of them has two cam bands (and I'm completely unfamiliar with both), that would be a good feature. You want the tank stable, and two cambands gives you greater security AND greater stability. Third, see if either has trim pockets up on your back. Having trim pockets gives you an easy way to move some weight around to balance your gear.

I would suggest putting the BC on WITH a tank, and inflating the bladder, and making sure you are comfortable in it with the bladder well-inflated, as it would be at the surface. Depending on how the bladder is constructed, it may or may not constrict around you when inflated.

I would also highly suggest that, if you buy one of these, you either take the inflator apart and service it (if you are the mechanical sort) or you take it in to your local shop and have it done. Inflators do get crud and corrosion in them, and o-rings age, and a leaking inflator is at best annoying and at worst a recipe for an accident. You also want to make sure the BC will hold air, which is best done by inflating it fully and letting it sit for several hours. You may not be able to do that with this sale, but at least inflate it and let it sit for as long as you can while you are talking to the fellow who is selling it. You CAN patch holes, but you really don't want to buy a BC with a hole in it, if you can avoid it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I actually went with the fathom. It looked like it hadn't even been worn and it was a better fit with more features. The Sherwood looked like it was 30 yrs old and on it's last legs. He had both of them blown up when I got there. And I blew it up and let it sit when I got home. Didn't notice any leaks. I don't have tanks but the manual inflator works.

I'm new to diving and female. What should I look for in a BCD and other equipment as a female. Is there a specific brand you may suggest?

Looking to experienced female divers for suggestions.
Thanks
