bro try posting at the General Asia forum eyebrow

Speedboat to Hin Muang/Hin Daeng would be the best bet for mantas - sighting not guaranteed but this would be the best site. I was in Krabi (very near Phuket) in Feb. and there were days when the weather/sea condition was rather rough... We did two dives at Hin Muang/Hin Daeng but did not see any mantas - this was the first time that I did not see a manta at this particular site.

since this was posted in the wrong forum I'm gonna hijack it... :)

Vie, how's your Salvo HID doing? love my 21W!!! went out with someone with a Halycon 18W in some low viz diving and there was a noticeable difference (he was commenting on how the Salvo was brighter and more of a light saber). Oddly his was more of a yellowish color.

I have almost fifty dives on my Salvo 18W - it is still going strong. Two of my occasional dive buddies each have a Salvo 18W also. We've tested the lights under some tough conditions; I have yet to try mine on a night dive though... I was diving alot in Feb. with someone who was using a Halcyon 18W and there was hardly any difference between the two - only a slight colour difference; I do prefer the round Salvo ballast and the smaller Halcyon Goodman handle though.

I like your Masami Teraoka avatar, btw.

ha u know teraoka-san's work... LOL I couldn't resist considering the whole MOF/ NMOF debate...

Oh you gotta try it on a nite dive! that was one of the first things I did! went on a nite dive with some of the folks here on the Philippine forum. We dropped in on top of some unsuspecting divers and my salvo just lit up the whole reef. Judging from their reactions, I think they were quite startled by it!

A day trip to the Similans from Phuket takes a LONG time for two dives and IMHO isn't worth it. Hin Muang/Hin Daeng are probably the best options, but you could also try Shark Point and Anemone Reef. Some operators will even combine these sites with a third dive on the King Cruiser wreck. I wouldn't count on seeing mantas but the dives are the best in the area immediately around Phuket. Visibility is not great, but there is a lot of sea life.

As for operators, I would recommend www.siamdivers.com. John Williams is a good contact and can put you on the best trip for your schedule.
