Hi jac.
Absolutely nothing wrong with a 25 year old reg.
I am one of the strongest proponents for diving what are in many cases gear that is far superior than the plastic gimmicky product available today.
I have been a full time instructor for 20 years and for the last 7 years I have been teaching 12 to 18 year old kids to dive as part of a school program in S Florida. I have small classes and 10 to 12 weeks to teach a class...45 minute classes each day, 5 days a week for 12 weeks, 2 days in the classroom and 3 in the pool. This includes the Advanced class when I teach the history of diving and scuba. I have a very extensive collection of vintage scuba kit some of which I let my Advanced students use in the pool for a couple of weeks. I don't know of any other instructor that does this as a part of the Advanced class.
The kids get to dive (pool only) with J valves and pull rods, Fenzys and Mistrals (new and old), Nemrod, DA's, Merlin, Healthways, Dial a Breath and Clipper. I find that the Dacor's with the double diaphragms hold up the best and am the least nervous of damaging.
That said, as an avid collector and user of vintage equipment Dacor has little appeal (to me). Most of their products were not historically significant and seemed just that little bit behind their contemporaries and they were always playing catch-up. Another problem is the myriad of different service parts needed to keep them running...even when they were available. How many different HP seats did Dacor use compared to USD? I do find many Dacor 1st stages over complicated and over engineered. This culminates with the Extreme Plus which I use as an illustration as one of the worst engineered regulators ever made...they breathe great though.
All this said given a choice of diving a 360 XLB and a Brute, Magnum, Aquarius, R2 or MK2 I'd take the Dacor.
