Ok I thought I had it all worked out in my mind and was going to stay at Sand dollar condo's. But now I've heard some real good things about Capt. Dons and have seen that kids stay and dive free during the period that I want to go. I'm going to be diving with my 13 and 15 year old so this could be good. I'm looking for real easy shore diving with easy entry,no boat traffic, little current, low stress etc.. I also noticed that the capt don boats look more modern. It seems the sand dollar boats require a back roll entry? If anyone who has been to both or either for that matter can give me pro's and cons it would be greatly appreciated. :D Ed

I would never dive on boats in Bonaire. Maybe on the wildside but I have dove shore there also. Shore diving capital of the world. Don't know if there is anywhere as good as Bonaire for shore diving. Stayed at Sand dollar 2 years ago. Nice place.

Why would you never boat dive stang? Because you don't feel it is needed? I heard from a friend that the vis from shore dives are great but then you go out further in a boat dive and as hard as it is to believe but it actually is even better! Even though I'm sure some of the boats do go to shore accessible sites.

Not needed on almost every site you can shore dive. You can kick out to the start of the reef where it slopes and go down and dive. Boats will take you just as far out. The vis has something to do with algae and a temperature change now I heard--- vis is usually very good.

It's not algae....it's plankton. There have been winds and it created an upwelling which brought plankton from the bottom up to the surface. I was there the first 2 weeks of July, and I've heard it's gotten significantly better lately. I've sent a message for an actual "vis report" and will post when I hear back :-)

That being said, I would put your vis worries to rest. It's all relative. 60 foot vis is better than what I'm used to diving locally, and the Bonaire reefs are so beautiful and diverse, whether boat diving or shore diving, you will have a spectacular time. And hey, any dive with 60 foot vis is better than no dive in my book (actually any dive is better than no dive in my book...lol)

Sand$ vs Cap Don's....Cap Don's is probably a better choice for the kids IMHO. On site restaurant, volley ball courts, pool close to the water, etc. The house reef at both are excellent.

Stayed at Capt Don's in January. Trip report link with lots of photo's below. Also Buddy dive (next door to Capt Don's) has nice dock entry for super easy shore diving and pools, restaraunt etc...
Shore diving at some of the spots around the island might be a bit much for the kids but the dock entries are super easy and fun.

I've been to most of the diveresorts on that end of the island so here's my totally subjective opinion.

Buddy's/Lion's Dive is probably nicer(the best being Harbour Village) than Capt' Dons or Sand$. However Sand$ has a little strip of beach, Buddy's and Capt' Don's have none being perched on ironshore and low cliffs.

Actually Bonaire Dive/Adventures' (Sand$ house op) boat looked newer than Capt' Don's. But as you've figured out they're six-pack sized and would probably require a back roll. And all I saw was a ladder for getting back on board - doesn't mean they don't have a swimstep, I just don't remember seeing one.

All of the house reefs along there are similar. Buddy's is the Calabas reef site, Capt. Don's is Cliff/LaMachaca and Sand$'s is Bari Reef. I suggest you dive them all. Unless you're a guest, Capt' Don's charges $5pp to dive there, but you get to use their lockers and showers and it's really convenient, you gear up and walk about 40' to the divedock and fall in the water. If you're not staying there, pull into the circular drive by the lobby and drop your gear there and go park. It's a short walk down the path below the bar to the dive locker area. You don't see it until you get down the hill. For one dive, swim north to Cliff, it's about the only small vertical wall in that area and typically the current will help you back south to the exit.

One thing I will say about BD&A is that their boat came in while some of my group was still in the water. Although the captains on Bonaire are in my experience very careful and watch for divers in the water. And they were of course idling in at the time.

All three resorts have excellent facilities, storage, and easy entries off dive docks with stairs for exiting the water. I would agree with the previous poster that there's probably more to do at Buddy's or Capt' Don's but it's also going to be a more adult crowd - the bar at Capt' Don's in particular is pretty busy most afternoons. Sand$ seems to be more families.

The reason for boat diving is to get to sites otherwise inaccessible. Like Rappel, imho one of the best dives there. Also there's a lot to see out at Klein, turtles at Jerry's Reef, the only drift dive(that I'm aware of) at Hands Off etc. For us what worked the best was a couple days of morning two-tank boat dives then the rest of the week was spent shorediving.

Some of the regular shore entries can be tricky over the ironshore/coral rubble, esp. for the kids(if they've got 80's on their backs) So you might want to dive the house reefs more. For shore sites, I thought Angel City, Invisibles and Salt Pier were easy entries, at least they had a little sandy cove area that you could enter/exit at. Salt Pier is a DM escorted dive only, ask your DM or diveop to schedule it. And I wouldn't get in the water south of Salt Pier with the kids, especially in the afternoons, the currents can be ripping.

My opinion is, skip the boat, rent a truck and enjoy. There is nothing out on Kline Bonaire (which is where we were taken), that is any better than on Bonaire itself. The biggest plus was doing everything at your own pace.
I really did enjoy my 10 days there, we got in 32 dives.

Thanks everyone! I'd like to hear about that vis report Cynde and great avatar did you take that photo? SJS do you think It would be worthwhile to stay and shore dive at SD and Boat dive at Capt Dons for a fee? Are they close? Terrie great report! It looks like you guy's had a great time! Was it crowded in Janurary? Does anybody know if it gets crowded when the kid's are off from school?
