Need dive buddies 8-11 to 8-13

I am from Dallas. I posted about a month ago about my trip to L.A. next week. Turns out I will be staying at the Sheraton downtown. I am trying to work out my dive schedule around my wife's seminar schedule. Which means I can dive anywhere around L.A. From Monday to Wendsday from morning till dark. I have found two people to dive with so far. I might be doing at least 1 dive around Malibu after 2pm. However, other suggestions are needed. Also, I heard that a dive knife is helpful for beach dive. Any suggestions I don't want to bring it if I don't have too. Another question I have is are there places to get air fills? Close to most beach dive locations.

There is one dive shop in Malibu. The other dive shops im not sure of besides sport chalets littered all over the place. Any how Just bring the min. in equiptment dont bring anything extra you dont need if you are not use to surf entrys! Less you have on you the less you have to loose

Right, there is one dive shop in malibu called Malibu Divers. You can check them out at Malibu Divers They are right across the street from Dukes restaurant.
Outside of diving in malibu, you'd have to go a lot further north or a lot further south. Between malibu and Redondo beach going south (Vet's park submarine canyon), there's pretty much nothing but surfing and sunbathing. After that you have a lot more dive spots, but some don't have immediate parking lot to beach access.

I only have a 3mm wetsuit. Do I need to get a core warmer or hood? I heard the water can be a bit chilly.

whoa! Yeah, you're gonna need something more or to rent one! We dive 7mm suits here and dry suits! Right now water can be in the mid to high 60s all the way to the low 70s but during dives.... you're gonna want more!

frankly I wouldn't dive in Malibu with the experience you have. Malibu tend to have a lot of currents , riptide and strong surf in the summer , you really need to be very fit and really understand the unique south cal. waters for safe shore diving. I would recommend you look at boat diving instead. If you don't mind the drive, I would suggest the "Spectre" (my favorite boat) who offers mostly trips to Anacapa Island, one of the best scenery you'll ever see underwater. Casino point is another alternative, you can rent anything you need right there, and the diving there is very easy... If you decide to do shore diving, make sure you check with the life guards, they are a great source of informations and most of them are divers as well.

Na he will be fine! The waves have been laying low this last week I have not had any problembs with current this summer yet, Big waves mabey but then you just scratch the dive. Oh and have yet to find a rip tide this year. Plus like Rick said he is in good hands
